Default Universal motivation

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Universal studios has a very nice website with a convenient 'contact us' link. I used said link to ask when they will begin releaseing blu-ray and expressed my interest in buying a number of their titles. May I suggest everyone do the same? Every showing of interest is a little push ( ) toward getting some quality titles on the best format.

GO BLU

I fully encourage this.

Quite honestly, I know we've all CASUALLY sent in e-mails in the past, but I truly wonder what would happen if we sent DAILY e-mails to Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks. If the many thousands of us on this forum really started sending just a basic form letter every 24 hours... what would the studio response be?

Communication en masse can have a powerful effect. Hell, I bet a lot of us are savvy enough with Outlook or Entourage to have it auto-drip an e-mail once a day until they all formally go Blu.

I did this. I wrote to Universal in USA as well as here in Australia. The latter probably won't do much good but I guess every little but can help.

I sent off a second email to their DVD division:
Quote:
Do you have a timeline concerning when you will release your first title for blu-ray?

I'm planning on giving away my HD DVD titles and HD-A2 to the local thrift store so I'd like to know when I could expect to replace my Universal HD DVD titles with Blu-ray versions.

I'd also like to express my interest in purchasing additional titles from Universal in the blu-ray format including both catalogue and new releases in the future.

My preferred HD Media player is my 60GB PS3.

Regards,
Ari
The first one was concerning their future releases on HD DVD where I asked when they were going to either drop HD DVD or go neutral and release on blu-ray as well.

I think that depends on how you word your email. I was quite polite and inquired as a concerned customer.

Flooding Universal with Email will not accomplish anything, all they do is put it all in their spam folder and delete it. Now a letter writing campaign would be better, because they would have to open all those letters to make sure it wasn't something important, and the chances are someone would see what the customers want from them.

Dear Universal,

For too long now this format war has raged and it has been us, the general public that have suffered the most.

I think now is the time to do the right thing and switch exclusively to Blu Ray, just like the other people are now starting to do.

I mean, it is inevitable really, Toshiba, Universal and Paramount will lose this war, the question is, who will move first and still be able to hold their heads up high?

I hope its Universal.

Oh and by the way, I'm from the UK and the market here is clearly pointing to Blu Ray, and I hear the US is not far behind.

Do the right think, come on over.
I hope I get something back!

I think the dwindling number of retailers and rental outfits stocking their HD-DVD's will be motivation enough. Neither Universal nor Paramount can match the likes of Warner and Fox for market share and backing a dying format isn't going to help matters.

Letters and emails don't hurt quite as much as poor sales or disgruntled shareholders.

No, I get what you're saying. And you're probably right. The only thing I disagree with is the statement that these things take time. Lest we forget that Warner literally made the decision in the span of about three days. Granted, they looked at their overall annual sales, but Universal and P'mount could do the same thing, too.

Never bother writing emails. They're just ignored, and all you'll get back is a form letter if you're lucky

Universal won't switch, no matter how much you want them to, until it's financially beneficial to them (aka Toshiba stops paying them)

Which isn't to say that consumer pressure doesn't count. Physical letters are a million times more effective than emails.
