Default Retailer to sell third high-def format

This VMD optical format is the worse quality HDTV format in terms of capacity since it uses existing red laser DVD technology. The bit rates are going to be low for VC1 movies. Could you imagine placing a HDTV movie on a 8.5GB disc the VC1 bit rate would be around 8Mbit per second. The players are only going to cost $199 for a 1080P model. I really doubt the movie studios in the United states are going to support this format. They are now saying that 50GB VMD 10 layer discs could be made. With 3 HDTV optical formats on the market the average consumer is going to be totally confused. Then some company will want to make a universal player that plays BLU-RAY, HD-DVD, and VMD discs.

Stupid arrogant CCP-think. They want their format that they control to dominate despite the impossibility of it all.

Luckily by the time it makes it here it'll be worthless and the stupid company will bleed billions in a dead format.

They need a format for Bollywood and other localised content - that is fine.

I notice they only ever mention capacity - what are the bandwidth limitations? That is a key number also...

This or similar was the initial HD-DVD proposal. It's similar the the Chinese proposal (that seems to be going nowhere fast). They are about 3 years too late, to be in with a chance. If they had this out in 2004 (Microsoft in association with a few companies had something similar as well) with some support and marketing - well life maybe interesting now. Even the HD-DVD fanboy's are admitting that Blu-ray will be the choice for masses, but for the discerning videophile HD-DVD is the only way to go. I guess they are allowed a face saving exit. This will have no impact not even on the supposed "cheaper" product being HD-DVD.

These guys will be destroyed, even by EVD alone.

They're late... Unless there's a change in tide.

Now that is a controversial statement for here.

What is unique about HD DVD that makes it the only choice for the videophile?

I can't see what is controversial about the HD-DVD fanboy's classifying HD-DVD as the videophile format.
Have a look at what they are posting! At least that is the way I'm interpreting their posts, that they think HD-DVD is now exclusive etc etc. Since when do the HD-DVD fanboy's use logic or facts.

The irony is Blu-ray was supposed to become elite then vanish as it was going to be much more expensive according to the HD-DVD camp. Don't ask me to explain why, as I use logic and facts. Ask the question over at FUD.com they maybe able to explain, just don't expect a rational argument.

I'm more than happy for them to use any argument they wish as they are beating a hasty retreat - I mean after all I don't think there are any new outrageous comments left for them to make, they have already made them.

Sorry, I was reading it as YOU classify it is as such.

My mistake.
