I was just looking through the 648+ films I'v watched, and it's very hard to choose films that need to be watched, there are a lot of films I liked (and many I really didn't like) but it's hard to get the right ones

Good work

Saw 69 out of 100. Liked all except American Beauty, Avatar, Closer, Fight Club, Frost/Nixon, I Am Legend, Love Actually

Quote:
Any unworthy inclusions or glaring omissions?
I'd probably have excluded the ones above I didn't like.

I'd probably have included:
-Apocalypse Now
-Casablanca
-Citizen Kane
-Gone With The Wind
-Godfather 1&2
-Rear Window
-Seven Samurai
-Wizard of Oz

In general, I loved your list and we love many of the same films (Mulholland, Double Life Veronique). Our lists would be largely similar, except I would have included more pre-1980 films (like those above).

Quote:
Have you ever read a list like this before?
yes, but not in blu-ray.com

Quote:
Doesn't it seem a little arrogant to believe that if you like something it should be seen by everyone?
no. you're just throwing it out there, not telling us we must see it.

Quote:
Think about it logically for a moment. Movies appeal to different people for different reasons. If you detest musicals, do you really want to watch The Sound of Music or The Wizard of Oz? If you don't like violence, will you enjoy Casino or Goodfellas? If you can't bear to watch a subtitled film, will you subject yourself to Das Boot or The Bicycle Thief?
generally, no , unless I want to go out of my comfort zone and see if I want to challenge my boundaries (a good thing sometimes)

Quote:
Do you avoid movies with nudity, swearing, or extreme sadness?
depends on context. I hate comedies with penis jokes, yet love a drama with nudity and orgy scenes (Eyes Wide Shut), so I think genre/context is important.

Quote:
Can you sit down and watch something that runs for three or four hours, or will you only watch shorter movies?
I actually prefer longer films to shorter ones. Don't know why.

Quote:
Do you avoid certain genres or find yourself only watching comedy or action movies?
Yes, I generally avoid action-superhero films and most comedies (except old school Monty Python, Bill Murray, Steve Martin)

Quote:
How do you even judge which 100 should be on your list? Should you include movies that introduced ideas or techniques which changed the way movies were made? What about just listing your 100 favorites? Could you even determine your 100 favorites, or would your list have changed by the time you finished compiling it?
yes and no. all of the above, and none of the above.

Quote:
What is the purpose of such a list anyway? Are you trying to show people that you have a vast amount of film knowledge? Or are you brave enough to list personal favorites that you know will be ridiculed by some of your audience?
all of the above, and none of the above.

Quote:
Is the list for you, or is it for your audience?
see above

Quote:
One of the aims of this exercise is to introduce you to new movies. The best way I can think of to do that is to suggest other titles you may like if you like one of the 100 on my list. So, for each movie, I will include suggestions for similar films.
nice idea.

great list overall . i'm looking forward to watching those I haven't seen

My list changed while I was writing. I switched five titles.

Make it alphabetical so you don't have to rank them

I've only seen 64 out of the 100, and I love 29 of them. Didn't like Caché, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Grave of the Fireflies, Juno, and The Lives of Others.

I gotta say that's one heck of an incredible job though, Steve.

"didn't like" might be too strong. just "not top 100 worthy". I gave American Beauty 3.5/5 stars. Here is an exchange I had with Higgy:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=9901

As far as Love Actually, I guess it was ok, but to be honest I think I'm biased because it was my ex's favorite film and admitting it was good is too hard for my ego Honestly, if I watched it tonight, I might give it 3.5 or 4 stars.
