Velodyne makes a really good sub for the money. SVS is another good company, you can check them out here, www.svsound.com. You could always try going to a local AV store or a Best Buy with a Magnolia Theater as well and listen to them before you buy. Paradigm and Definitive Technologies are great as well. to read some reviews go to www.soundandvisionmag.com, they have a review section you can read.

Don't buy into the "matching sub" sales pitch. Some companies like Velodyne and HSU specialize in subs and do it much better than many speaker companies. Velodyne's digital servo series subs help sub placement by measuring room accoustics and correcting sub output. If you can afford it, I would say seriously check out Velodyne.

If M&K were still around, I would recommend them without hesitation. M&K developed the first subs, and they are simply amazing.
