Default New with Audio

Hello,
I'm new to the forums (not w/ Blu-ray ) and wanted to get some opinons and some questions answered about my audio setup. I currently have my PS3 hooked up via Optical to a cheapo Samsung home theater system (DD5.1 Pro-logicII and DTS) What would be the best settings to have to get the best sound?

I'm also looking into recievers, and wanted to know what everyone thought about this bundle I came across...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....1&type=product

I originally wanted to run audio through HDMI, but if I could get HD sound through optical I figured that this would be a good deal....any suggestions?

TIA

you cannot get HD surround sound from Optical. (only 2.0 stereo)

I noticed this deal on sunday in the ads...I thought it would be an ok deal, only I would see about changing the Yamaha RX-V441 to the RX-V661...which can process hdmi audio.

Do all HDMI recievers decode HD sound? I wonder if they would let you upgrade the reciever....Also, they are now giving a free Toshiba HD-DVD player if you purchase that deal. lol.

no, not all hdmi receivers process hdmi audio...and manufacturers make it extremely difficult to tell which ones do and do not.

Usually it should say "hidmi passthrough" or "separate cable is needed for audio"...but even then its vague and hard to find in the description.

So my own personal rule of thumb is if it costs less than $300 than its probably not hdmi audio compliant. (or you can look around online and see what other people say about any particular receiver to find out)
