Whenever a movie is released that I've been excited and waiting to see for over a year I tend to be disappointed because the hype has built so much. After reading some non-spoiler reviews over the past week I tempered my expectations (nothing is going to wow me like it did when i was younger I realize).

We saw it Friday night and my buddy insisted we see it in IMAX 3D. I generally don't feel that paying almost double for a ticket is worth it, but in this case I was really blown away. For the first time I'm interested in buying a 3D projector.

I then went and saw the movie again on Sunday in 2D. I haven't seen a movie twice in its theatrical run in over a decade. It wasn't that Prometheus was everything I wanted it to be (the fanboy in me...) but I wanted to experience it again. Now knowing what to expect I could focus on stuff I missed the first time...

Anyways onto the movie:
Is it perfect? No.
Would I have wanted certain changes to be made? Of course. However I realize that it was made for the masses, not to cater to my wants.
Do I hope that the Blu-ray actually has an extended cut with scenes added back into it? Without a doubt!
Do I think that there felt like some stuff/explanations/reactions/behaviors were a result of stuff being cut out? Yeah.

I do like that it made me want to talk about it.

Here are some things that I've been thinking about:
[Show spoiler]
1. Was the first Engineer on earth acting on a mission (having been dropped off) or was he a renegade and creating life without the approval of the other engineers? Is this why they wanted to kill the humans when they arrived?
Or did the engineers just want to end their project (earth & humans) when humans had evolved enough for space travel? 'When they have the technology to come find us we'll kill them because we don't want them becoming powerful enough to create their own life...'

2. Wouldn't you want to do a massive battery of tests on the psychological ability for crew members to deal with the possibility of running into aliens or alien technology? I'd want to know that the people could deal with it and not freak out.

2. After Holloway is burned to death everyone seems pretty at ease about it. I feel like scenes were missing here where it was explained to everyone what happened.

3. After Fifield (The geologist guy) kills a bunch of the crew what happens to the rest of them? I feel like some of the crew of 17 weren't accounted for. Did they die when the ship crashed?

4. Who was David talking to in the cryo chamber? Was it Weyland? Or someone else?

5. I find it kinda hard to believe that all this happened on LV-223 and a similar type of event happens at some point (before or after Prometheus's timeline) which results in ANOTHER ship crashing on LV-226. I realize that the ship that crashed on LV-226 could have happened when the historical record of the Engineers running away from something occurred.

6. What were the Engineers running from? Another Bio-weapon they created that got out of control? Another species they are at war with? An alien that we simply didn't get to see?

7. I personally think that the black goo WAS the bio-weapon. The creation of the alien species was NOT what was intended. Shaw's ultimate revenge (involuntary of course) was releasing the future alien species on the universe (thus her creators).

8. I pray we'll get a sequel as soon as possible. I just don't need/want them to ever address if Shaw made it to the engineers home world. It can be about a rescue mission to LV-223 where the proto queen has started her first colony. If the engineers are that powerful then there isn't much Shaw can do but crash the ship on their home world. Unless it's a prologue and they flee their home world and one of those ships crashes on LV-226.

9. The one thing I really wish they had NOT done was make the engineers so similar to humans. They were much more frightening to me if their actual body looked like the Space Jockey. Just my 2 cents.

Overall I did enjoy it. I'm happy with my pre-order and wish it were coming out sooner.

*Edit: 4 out of 5

[Show spoiler]

1. My Feeling is that, based on the Prometheus theme, the Engineed was a renegade. Either our planet wasn't supposed to be receiving this "genetic upgrade", or it was the wrong kind. Hence other engineers trying to "undo" what he did later.

2. The way I see it, it was a private mission, entirely financed by Wayland for his own personal (selfish) goal. So ... his criterias were probably not the same as for a true scientific mission I surmise.

3. I think we have to guess so. 2 died inside but were re-animated by mutation. Many were killed in the assault of Fifield, 4 or 5 died in the Engineer assault, There were 3 in the cockpit at the end, leaving Shawn and Vickers. /shrug

4. Wayland. Their "father", which pissed Vickers off big time.

5. The idea, or so it seems, is that somehow the proto queen we see at the end of Prometheus will infect another Engineer (presumably in one of the other ships here), who will then attempt to depart, and will end up crashing on LV-426. Cue in "Alien", 100 years later.

6. One of the sore unexplained points. Why run onto a dead end if chased by an hostile entity. Maybe - just maybe - there was a weapon in that chamber that would have allowed them, in theory, to fight against it?

7. My point of view, along with the theme of the Destruction/ Creation theme, is that there are -2- goos. A dark grey one seeping through the urns, and a dark one, contained in vials inside the urns. The grey one destroys/ mutates, the black one perfects/ creates.
Imo LV 223 was the Bio-lab of the engineers, not just a weapon's lab. This is where they create life, and engineer the tools to destroy it too (again, theme of the movie). This is also why it was shown on earth, both as a testament that it was the place where we were created, and also the place where our destruction could rain onto us if we were to displease our creators.

8. I would love to see a follow up to see what Shaw is going to find (with only 1 human and 1 badly damaged android, everything else being alien). Would probably become to outlandish/ esoteric for most viewers though, so probably won't happen.

9. Actually it kinda made sense to me. Think of David. We made him in our image, just like our "creators" made us (somewhat) in their image.

Awesome. You rock. Great answers.

I read that Prometheus Unbound article and there was a lot of allegory in the film I missed.

[Show spoiler]Especially Jesus maybe being an engineer or engineered and their dissatisfaction with us for killing the savior they sent to help us

I truly hope that the
[Show spoiler] numbers @ the end are the date for the announcement of the sequel. If there is a chance (albeit slim I know) that they filmed 2 movies back to back it would literally make my (movie fandom) year.
I have a feeling it has to do with the blu-ray release though. It would be a bummer (though more of a reality) to have to wait another 3+ years for the sequel.

There were alot of scenes that I felt were cut short. Maybe what I'm trying to say is that when they were cutting this flick and trying to trim the fat it feels like they took off a little bit meat with it.
I kind of felt the same about Rise of the Planet of the Apes and some of the amazing looking scenes that were clearly glimpsed in the trailer, e.g.
[Show spoiler]Caesar and Cornelia in the lab
, and others that sadly didn't make the final cut. I love ROTPOTA and it is still my favorite of 2011, but I can see the parallels between that and Prometheus in that they both obviously have a few elements missing in action for now that could easily be restored later to make them both that much better. Maybe we will get a DC of this one out whenever it lands on Blu.

Knowing Scott's history with Director's cuts wouldn't be surprised if this happened.

Let's hope. Maybe we could get four versions and a work print like the blade runner bluray.

I mean I don't necessarily think its needed, but he could, maybe fill out the story, or maybe he's saving some answers for another movie.

My take on why the room doesn't stop and talk about what happened to you-know-you is because they've moved on to something more important. It felt totally realistic to me. She enters the room, and there's a tone there that she isn't about to break - since at worst they'll kill her, and at best they'll let her come along. Not freaking out is pretty much the only option there.

Pretty funny, and a good read.

Very surprised, and a bit disappointed that he answered the Vickers question. I figured he'd let people wonder about that one forever.

I don't like 3D films for this (darkens the image) and other reasons (although I think RealD 3D darkens more than Dolby 3D does), but I must say that Hugo looked absolutely fine in 3D.

However, there are new projection technologies coming that will result in far brighter images and this issue with 3D being darker to the extent where it hurts the image should go eventually go away (at least in theatres with newer equipment).
