Airplane! (1980)
More like a trainwreck. One you just can't look away from thanks to its absurdity, its clever wordplay, and Leslie Nielsen. Not funny at all. Terribly overrated.

yes, but I didn't find that strange, as it seemed natural with Father & Son being approx the same age, plus I think the main point was to show that the circumstances surrounding Vito's rise humanized his (and now Michael's) reality, so the audience could withhold the "mafia" judgment easier.

I'd go as far as to say Part II is the way stronger film in many respects.
agreed! I prefer Part II now. Much richer of a film, IMO.

But when it comes down to it, The Godfather is far more memorable, with many scenes sealed in the concrete of pop culture forever, The Godfather Part II seems to be largely unrespected in that respect, everyone loves it, but it's not as quoted as instantly or parodied.
not to mention that Godfather I has Brando - possibly the greatest actor of all time in the greatest film of all time = tough competition!

Not saying it necessarily makes it a weaker film, but many would probably be able to name more scenes from The Godfather than The Godfather Part II.
I think there are lots of famous scenes from part II also:

Fredo kiss is right up there with any Part I scene as the most memorable GF scene ever

Michael waiting in house while Fredo out on boat - hears shot ring out - then drops his head - CLASSIC

I watched Phenomenon last night (first time on Blu-ray). Pretty decent presentation. I'm always surprised that it never gets mentioned. Travolta, Whitaker, Duvall, DeMunn, Sedgwick. I love the scene with Travolta and Spiner when he's being tested.

Easy 4/5

Good stuff, I get the spilt in the story it's just very strange how it's split. Part II really does get stronger everytime you see it

oh i see, you would just split it up different (smaller chunks in between the split back and forth, etc)? gotcha.

EDIT: Foggy, how great is that scene when Michael realizes that
[Show spoiler]Fredo betrayed him
at the bar in Cuba? Fredo goes
[Show spoiler]"Johnny Ola knows these places like the back of his hand!!!" RIGHT AFTER Fredo said he never met Johnny Ola!

Yeah, It's really really awesome, you see him instantly click, yet he's always been suspect and on guard. It's a really well rounded film, I still dreading to see how Part III disappoints so much

Have you seen part III? I think it gets a bad rap, because its part 3 in a trilogy with 2 of the greatest films of all-time! Even that awesome website "They SHoot Pictures" , that ranks the top 1000 films of all time has GF 1 & 2 at #5 and #15 all-time!
http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_top100films.htm

In that company, part III was bound to dissapoint. When I view it by itself, its a strong film, IMO. I give it a 4/5 and enjoy it every time I throw it in. That's just my 2 cents.

No, it's the only one I haven't seen, I was sitting on it for a while and then I brought the set on Blu-Ray so I decided to go back through Part 1 and 2 before getting around to it. From what I've heard it's not bad, but it's not Godfather good I probably won't hate it, but it won't be anything on the first two

there ya go!!! calibrate your expectations!!! squid is an expert at this!

2 people watch the same film, but with different expectations:

Person#1: Expects film to be 5/5. It was good = DISSAPPOINTED. Rates it 3/5.

Person#2: Expects film to be 3/5. It was good = PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. Rates it 4/5.

Different expectations = Different experience!

Yeah, the original one entertained me a little more, but with the reboot out, it definitely shows its flaws more. I've always known that "Spiderman" was cartoony and cheesy, but it seems even moreso now. Sets, props, and special effects are not aging well.
seeing as you've watched Spidey and Amazing Spidey so close together. A few questions (perhaps these are more philosophical):

-if Spidey is already "cheesy"/not aging well only 5-10 years later, couldn't Amazing Spidey also be "cheesy"/not aged well as soon as 2020?

-if so, then are remakes/reboots no more than a special effect/set/prop update? kind of sad, if so.

-the irony with all of this is one of the main points you make - that Amazing Spidey has less, not more action. Then why do the remake?

I found The Amazing Spiderman to really plod through the mud with telling the origin story over again and really taking it's time, and it didn't deliver a satisfying resolution, leaving it all for the sequel. The two films are different enough, but feel like they're nothing but similar starting points to different paths, I'm sure the sequels will justify Amazing Spiderman's existence more than itself

I also came across, Spiderman has really gone a long way since his first live action on-screen debut...

It's possible. But, Sam Raimi's films (to include just about every other films he made, like the "Evil Dead" trilogy and "Darkman") have always been cheesy on purpose. Even back when "Spiderman" first came out, I found it a bit on the self-consciously cheesy side. If anything, it shows more when you stand it up against the new film (just as Tim Burton's "Batman" shows its age/cheesiness next to Nolan's).

It may be possible to have a darker, more serious "Spidey" film come along to make "The Amazing Spidey" look cheesy, but it seems unlikely to me. By then, we'd all be sick of Spiderman anyway.

Some folks would say that. A few exceptions make the statement false (at least imo):
  • David Cronenberg's "The Fly"
  • David Fincher's "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
  • Francis Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula"
  • Gore Verbinski's "The Ring"
  • JJ Abram's "Star Trek"
  • John Carpenter's "The Thing"
  • Martin Campbell's Bond movies ("Casino Royale," and heck "GoldenEye" too)
  • Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear"
  • Nolan's "Batman"
  • Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" (debatable, I know, but I love it )
  • Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead"
  • The 70s version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"
  • The 2008 "Death Race"
  • "I Am Legend" (third incarnation of "The Last Man on Earth")
  • "The Incredible Hulk"
  • "The Italian Job" 2003
  • "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (technically a remake of "Conquest for POTA")
  • "X-Men: First Class"
  • "A Fistfull of Dollars" (remake of "Yojimbo," based on an American detective novel )
  • The 1941 "Maltese Falcon" (third remake in a ten year span...and you thought "Spiderman" was bad )
And heck, "The Amazing Spiderman" could be worthy of this short list.

I'm hoping that the new "Total Recall" will also represent a step up from the original (which is expecting a lot, because I love the original).

I know, right?!!

I'm assuming there's a grander scheme at work; a complete story arc for two, three, or more movies that will give us more action, and hopefully more resolution and answers regarding all the issues this first film threw out there (like what happened to Parker's parents; I realized halfway through that they kinda dropped the subject ). I'm also guessing there would be more to the character relationships, they'll introduce the newspaper guy again, introduce MJ and make a convoluted love triangle, do the Green Goblin in a whole new way, blah blah blah...

I certainly agree about the film's resolution. I personally didn't mind the plodding though.

That video looks every bit as classy as Adam West's "Batman" saga!

You (or who ever guess first) will receive a cookie if you can guess correctly which actor is narrating in that clip?
