There is a rumour going around that the chip inside the Panasonic cannot support DTS-HD MA therefore the forthcoming firmware update from Panasonic will only allow decoding of TrueHD and DTS-HD but not DTS-HD MA, can anyone confirm or deny this?

kjack reported that the current version of the Sigma chip wasn't designed to handle DTS-HD MA.

Let's put words in my mouth. It was supposed to be able to handle it, but the DTS-HD MA processing is much more complex than was anticipated. I think also that some people assumed DTS-HD meant DTS-HD MA, when in reality there are several flavors of DTS-HD.

What happened? You got bad info from DTS when designing the DSP power that would be needed in your chip?

This is disappointing news. It means the HD audio of those Fox titles will remain elusive.

Another piece of the puzzle!

Sorry to put words in your mouth, I wasn't sure if you were checking this thread regularly (thanks for proving me wrong; we appreciate your participation).

That is interesting though. DTS-HD MA ended up being more hardware intensive than first estimated. So the original chip was able to decode DTS-HD MA until DTS changed the specs. Would that be an accurate statement?

I check up to see what's happening a couple times a day.

Hmmm...no. Until one gets the final specs and test bitstreams, you can only estimate things. And you also have to take into account all the audio processing these players have to do (secondary audio decode, mix with interactive audio, upsample and mix with main audio, format for HDMI, downsample and downmix for analog outputs and SPDIF, etc.), some of which you have to estimate until it is actually implemented. Sometimes a little thing can throw your estimate off.

So was this a Sigma miscalculation or a DTS miscalculation? Or a little of both?

Kjack,

From what I've read, you guys have or are working on a new chip that can handle all of these tasks. Is there any information you can give us as to when these chips may start being implemented into the new players?

I want a fully featured BD player, and was hoping that I might be able to get one this fall.

Thanks.

Sorry, can't give out any player-specific info or schedules. But you won't be disappointed.

I didn't want to blame any specifically (especially a company which has been so kind as to provide an insider to our forums). I just wish that DTS would have gotten their product finalized in time.

Now now, josh. A good rep won't play the blaming game.

This is cryptically optimistic. I'll assume it'll happen within the third quarter.

How does Sigma affected with the mandatory implementation of BD Live come July?

Question regarding DTS....

I know standard DTS can be extracted from a DTS masters track, but what about DTS high resolution?
In other words... If my player can decode high resolution(and not masters), when playing a Fox title with DTS master, will I be able to pull a DTS high resolution track from it or just the standard DTS Im getting right now?

DTS HD is their version of Dolby Digital Plus, whereas DTS-MA is like Dolby TrueHD (except Plus & HD *work*) each version has a core DTS standard track.

Default stargate atlantis

Paidgeek -

before someone asked about Stargate Atlantis and you didn't answer so Ill ask: since it was supposed to be released already for a while but there hasn't been any word, do you know anything? about the release or encoding specs?

Im not complaining since I wont even have an hdtv for a long while...(unless dell puts blu into its inspirons soon ) its just that I just hope that all of this extra time is being put to good use, namely: encoding with AVC at the highest possible bitrates along with Dolby TruHD audio.

and what about SG-1? I hope the film transfers for seasons 1-7 are good. and for encoding, same thing goes for SG-1 as Atlantis, keywords being AVC, high bitrate and TruHD.
