Sorry gang. Made a special trip to B&N and apparently this particular store doesn't have anything outside of impulse movies by their register. So no pictures today. I'll check around this weekend, but hopefully someone else can post some pics before me.

Yeah, I realize they're very hit or miss...but I was hoping to score 'em with the 40% off sale they've got going.
I noticed other releases that came out on the 28th too; some had slips some didn't.

Got my screener copies (late) in the mail today, so I figured I'd pass on a few pics of the packaging. The embossed slipcover and front artwork designs are the same (aside from the "Blu Ray" banner at the top) and all five discs are in blue (not black) multi-hubbed keepcases. No interior cover artwork or inserts, aside from the digital copy sheet. Haven't popped the discs in yet, but I have no reason to believe they're any different than the trilogy set.

Thank you for posting the pictures and information.

Now please let us know if FotR has had the contrast/tint fixed please. I'm 99.9% sure it's the exact same discs.

I hold out hope. But it is a fool's hope.

I'm also waiting for the first jackhole to post a photoshopped screencap as "proof" that there's a new transfer...

You'd really think it would be a no-brainer to adjust the tint for this reissue - but of course it'll be the exact same discs. WB would have to be willing to admit that an error was made in the first place. Can't allow that to happen, now can we.

Has it ever been solved as to whether this is an error or what Jackson really wanted?

Honestly, I would get the Fellowship EE individual release if I knew the color timing on the subtitles were fixed. I like the new color timing to the film but the tint to the subtitles always throws me off.

Especially when compared to the iTunes HD digital copy of the film with the old color timing.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I've started downloading it now. I know detail-wise it can't compete with the remastered BD, but it'll be nice to have a higher than DVD quality version of the original color timing (since I assume the new color timing will be used from here on out - hopefully minus the green tint at some point in the future).

I hear ya. I would really like to hear from Ken Brown(the reviewer on this site who reviewed the TE and EE boxsets) about this particular release. I would definitely trust his take on it.

Unfortunately that's exactly what I was thinking.

I personally think that there are three completely different things going on in the FotR EE:

1) A new tranfer that has added detail, clarity, and depth, and looks great.

2) New scene specific color timing changes that were made by Peter Jackson and Andrew Lesnie.

3) An overall green tint/contrast problem that was some kind of error and has been swept under the rug.

If Warner produced exactly one million copies of the box set with 6 Blu-ray discs each, that would mean six million Blu-ray discs. If each one costs .50 cents, they are spending three million dollars just for materials. Just for the movie discs. And they produced a hell of a lot more than one million copies. If they could cut that cost and increase their profit by that much, they would.

I think it's neither. The third option is that it was felt to be the best that could be achieved in the timescale and budget available, without going back and recompositing the entire thing from original elements.

Neither Jackson nor Lesnie has ever said anything like "this is how I wanted it to look", something that has often been lost in a lot of the assumptions and assertions on this thread. That's not mere semantics; when Jackson said recently that FotR looks the best it ever has, he was telling the truth — it does — but that doesn't mean it's how he would want it to look if he had his druthers in the proverbial Best of All Possible Worlds. It's just a "best possible under the circumstances" answer. He's a business man, and knows how to put a positive gloss on things with the best of 'em.

The "official" WB statement in response to complaints only said that the transfer looked the way it was intended to look (i.e. it wasn't a screw-up on WB's part) — it never said this is how Jackson & Lesnie wanted it to look, either. The only statement Jackson has made, and it was a while back now, in fact indicates the exact opposite: he acknowledged the colour timing got screwed up prior to the theatrical release, but this was largely because they didn't have the digital tools available to them then that they had for the latter two films, and that the timing they forced on the BD of FotR was an attempt to address the problems.

I personally find it hard to believe that they don't have a reference copy of all the component footage stored from before the original colour timing changes, so I'm hopeful that it'll just be a matter of time (and money) before Jackson gets round to a new transfer that isn't so screwed up, palette-wise. But I doubt that's going to be before the third Hobbit film hits. He's a little busy at the moment, eh?

Oh, and I did a quick spot-check and FOTR appears to have the same color issues.

Can't post another picture right now, but they're color-coded like the old Extended Editions (green, red, blue).

I wish they used the original posters for Part 1 and 3 as the covers, but at least we got The Two Towers.

With that said, who double dipped for the theatrical and extended edition box sets? If so, that's a total of TWENTY ONE discs to own!

Thanks very much for the pictures Randy, i've been waiting for these!! Can i just ask is the blue case the normal size of english blu-ray cases? (which is a tiny bit thicker than the US ones i believe) and does the slip cover go on from the top to bottom rather than left to right?

I am in the UK and have heard the DVDs might not be region free but the blu-ray should be fine, is that right? Can anyone confirm whether the dvds will work on my ps3 or not??

Also if i want to buy all 3 movies off amazon does anyone know if it would be cheaper buying them separately or altogether? (as i have read someone write about items under £15 do not get an overseas charge. They are 23.68 dollars each on amazon which is £15.047!?)

Thanks very much in advance!

Jay

Yes, it looks like it's a tiny bit thicker than the standard US size but not by much. That may be the reason why there wasn't room for the booklets contained in the trilogy release. Also, these are normal "top to bottom" slipcovers. As for your question about region and PS3 compatibility, I don't have the resources to check that for you. These are the same discs as the trilogy release, so any information for those would apply to these as well.
