IMO, unless you have a hdtv with min 720p native, there's little if any point buying a Blu-Ray player. Also, if you can't afford a HDTV, then there's a good chance you won't be able to afford a Blu-Ray player with the first likely to cost in the region of £1,000. Also, compatible amps/speakers capable of delivering the new lossless dolby digital sound will be expensive at first. Though obviously Blu-y will still carry standard DD 5.1, (though at a higher bit rate meaning noticeably higher than dvd quality sound).
