HD resolutions

I was told by several different sources that the human eye cannot tell the difference between 720p, 1080i/p from the suggested viewing distance. They claim the only way you can benefit from 1080P is if you sit really close, or are a huge gamer. Either way doesn't really apply to me, I play games but sit far away. Would I benefit from 1080P????
