Twilight Time is a co-author.

Sony is handing over the transfer, yes... but Twilight Time is authoring the master disc themselves. Sony isn't delivering a complete master to Twilight Time that they aren't allowed to touch.

Twilight Time, as the co-author of the disc, owes it to their customers AND themselves to see if they are in fact getting the high-quality and correct transfer that they are advertising to their customers.

You can't make a reputation on bringing quality to the consumer AND then say "but it wasn't our fault" if you get a crap transfer.

As I said... heap most of the blame on Sony IF it turns out they gave them the master with this change... but you can't leave Twilight Time blameless. Unless they want to admit they are the same as Echo Bridge or Mill Creek with a higher price, then they MUST do more to verify before they go to production.

IF the argument is Twilight Time is not expected to watch the movie and verify it... how do they know if they get a cut/censored version? how do they know if they get a version with missing scenes? how do they know if they get a version with bad/missing audio or even a wrong language track? how do they know if they even get a movie transfer at all?

I mean... surely they verify that they were given what they were promised, right? That's not an unreasonable expectation. And they claim to be producing movies for "fans and collectors" so... doesn't it behoove them to make sure they are in fact putting out the quality product that they claim?
Twilight Time do not author "themselves." They author the discs at a company that authors discs. And that company is one of the best authoring houses in the country, so no blame can be put on the authoring of this disc, which means that Twilight Time did the best they could with the master they were handed by Sony. None of this happened at the authoring phase nor could it have. Again, I have not seen this transfer and won't until Thursday, at which point I can weigh in.

Or he could just return them and break even or charge 50 and make a smaller profit. Even with this news I still see them going for like 70 to 80 on average with a few that have sold for 100.

While a true statement, it doesn't seem to match the discussion that is going on about this particular blu-ray transfer.

Frankly, it's a stunning difference, and I think requires someone in authority to weigh in... the two transfers are (pun fully intended) night and day.

And, while I didn't work on the film, I have a pretty good guess as to which one is closer to correct.

What I saw in the post I replied to was basically a summary of your opinion on all this, wherein you essentially said you swept the screenshots here under the rug because they are either photographs, or too small. And what I said was that I don't believe they are all photographs (not even nearly all), and if they are too small you can overcome that problem yourself. So I think they aren't so easily swept under the rug.

My copy will arrive today, but I'm undecided as to whether I will see for myself without first waiting for TT to say something more about it. I think there is plenty of evidence here that I don't need to see for myself, to know something is terribly wrong here. I'm not one of these people that is disappointed it doesn't look like it used to because I've never seen this movie before. Instead I'm a person who looks at the images and says, wow, that's terrible film-making, in some you can barely even see the actors' faces, when clearly you were supposed to be able to -- which is kind of a no-no in drama, wouldn't you say?

I can't believe this is still being argued over..........either Tom Savini, George Romero or who ever did the Cinematography should have signed this off, if they have not it is faulted and therefore will or should be replaced.......if not return it for a refund. In the mean time lets all wait and see.

"Seeing it" isn't the problem here. It's the jumping to the conclusion that TT was responsible for the change, if any, which they are not.

And of course, there's the separate issue that Sony may or may not reply to them with who approved and initiated any change. Suppose Romero happened to sign of on this a few years back? - highly unlikely but a big WHOOPS if that or something similar happens.

In the meantime, TT takes the brunt of unfair and unfounded criticism.

Okay that's fine. Everyone can think what they want, as I've stated a hundred times, but if someone is going to make personal comment, after two days of defending a transfer they've never seen...you're gonna hear about it. (Not you) I'm not interested in arguing about twilight time. I'm done with them. I've stated my opinion. I think they're echo bridge at 5x's the price, so...there ya go. I've already bowed out of this conversation.

This thread has become almost unreadable to follow in a coherent manner. Too many voices loudly arguing against each other, with a host of side issues that are only barely relevant to NOTLD90.

Agreed. One does not have to have seen the Blu-ray to know that TT doesn't author the discs themselves, they do not participate in any restoration efforts, and they only deal in what the studios make available to them. TT is only the messenger.

I honestly don't think this is getting fixed. Unless Sony is willing to provide another transfer--does TT have any other recourse?

Sony's home video offices are located in California and their day is just beginning. I wouldn't imagine we get a definitive answer until tomorrow at the very earliest, if Sony attempts to publicly explain the change in color correction. It's very possible they keep quiet and say nothing, at least to public sources.

I apologize for wanting my $35 worth and the movie to look how it's supposed to. This is obviously all our fault for complaining and not being complacent with a botched transfer. All hail Twilight Time, SAE, and Sony!

As stated, Twilight Time should have some sort of quality control over their product, even if the disc isn't authored in house. The comparisons to "Wal-Mart" or "DirecTV" are absolutely absurd. They do have a hand in the finished product.

Are they entirely to blame? No. But they are still responsible for their product.

And to those saying that the screencaps aren't a 100% accurate representation of the disc, that's maybe true. However, there is no denying that the film is considerably darker and that there is something wrong here. The missing audio cue, the lack-of-magnets, BFD. But this is something that affects a significant portion of the film.

Blu-ray is supposed to provide the highest quality presentation available, and this release is not that.

That said, Twilight Time has said they are looking into the issue. At this point, all we can do is wait and see how they handle the situation.

If they issue replacements, no harm done. If not, then they've just buried the film in the ground for the next three years. We'll see what happens.

I doubt Sony will do anything. We already know the film is a very low priority for Sony by the very fact that they passed it on to TT. I don't see them putting any resources towards fixing this issue, at least no time soon. Perhaps in 3 years, if it ever gets a wide release, we'll see a proper transfer.

Twilight Time has said they're offering refunds and they're going to contact Sony. If Sony says this is how they wanted for it to look, people will still get a refund. If Sony says this isn't how it was supposed to look, they'll either do a replacement program or just do refunds. It's all up to Sony at this point. Regardless of what happens, people can get a refund.

My gut tells me Sony will never want to touch this title again. And Twilight Time will think twice about touching any of the horror titles in Sony's catalog. Now they will probably sit in Sony's vault unseen.... forever!
