Uh-oh. Looks like old-school fans of this one are screwed. 14 minutes ago from the Twilight Time Facebook page...
Felix Pena: I got my copy of NOLTD '90 yesterday and watched it last night. I thought the picture was a little dark and some blue seems to have been added to create a more gradual sense of the transition from day to night. It makes the movie a little scarier as far as I'm concerned and I agree that the pictures people keep posting are not a true representation of the difference. People should reserve judgement until they've seen it for themselves. I look forward to purchasing more titles from you in the future. Thanks again for resurrecting this cult classic and giving it a second life. Twilight Time DVD Label: Appreciate your support, Felix, it means a lot to us. These situations can be stressful, but all will be resolved. As we stated on Sunday, we were in touch with the studio yesterday, and a definitive answer will be coming soon, but all the indications are this was how the Blu-ray was intended to look. |

Does Sutter Cane work for Sony? And is Twilight Time's quality control staffed by the ghost of Ray Charles? |

Twilight Time posted this on their Facebook page in response to someone from the UK asking if their copy had been shipped yet...
"SAE is a bit overwhelmed with orders at the moment, and are working hard to process everything...if you have any questions or concerns email them at info@screenarchives.com but rest assured they'll get to yours soon if they haven't already." Since they are still shipping copies, even through all the brouhaha, it's pretty clear they have no intention of fixing anything and never did. |

As others have said, they've done all the fixing they can for the moment -- offer a refund. They can't just issue a press release saying, "We're hard at work on a new transfer that preserves the original look." It's not in their power.

Wouldn't it make more sense to stop shipping copies until they get an answer from Sony as to whether this was intentional or not? They are obviously anticipating what the answer will be and are just stringing people along to save face.

Probably because they are too cozy with Twilight Time. If they get an insider from a certain company on that site, they only lob softball questiosn their way.

I think they're fairly certain of what nobody wants to accept... that SONY very likely did this on purpose... It's obviously and 'error' for film-fans but it wasn't a mistake in the process of doing the master. They chose to do it. TT obviously didn't know it was altered... they are in a tricky spot because it's out of their hands. Sony isn't going to be remastering the film to fix this problem.

As far as "anticipating what the answer will be", what if the answer is, "No one seems to know"? Would that fundamentally change the situation? |

No, they're not. They're OBVIOUSLY giving the customers the choice to make up your mind. While it's unanimous changes were made, and near unanimous they were of detriment, it's not unanimous that the blu-ray is worthless. People should see what's there NOW (and it's not "defective" but it may have been a mistake in colour timing, rather than a deliberate attempt at a final release verson) and decide "Do I want it? Or do I want a refund?", because any replacement will take WEEKS anyway, if not MONTHS. Might as well see what's there, because there are LOTS of reviews in this thread from people saying "It's not great, but I'm not too bothered" or "I'll be in for a replacement, but I can live with it". Give more of those people a chance to see their copy. You're being an ass.

My point is that this is the end of the line. There will be no recall, no new print struck, no nothing other than refunds. If you call that "being an ass" then so be it. |
