Hey Aces.

Just relaxing and watching tv after a 5 1/2 day work week. Tomorrow is my only day off. What have you been up to? Are you loving your dual SubM's? Bought any new toys lately?

It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada so we've got a long weekend. The wife has to work all weekend though, so we had our turkey dinner last weekend. Just holding down the fort with the kids this weekend, they've had a bunch of activities so I've been a taxi driver quite a bit.

I bought an external mic for my camcorder some time ago, it had to be ordered and it finally came in on Friday. Just been playing around with that this weekend. Made a thread in the speaker section featuring some vids I made, take a look and vote for the one you like better.

I'm going to try and finish Cabin in the Woods, that movie has been a struggle to get threw so far.

The dual SubM's are awesome and I'm loving them!

I hope you enjoy your extended weekend, in between taxi drives.

I remember reading about your mic a while back. I'll be sure to check out that thread here soon.

I've really been wanting to check out Cabin in the Woods. It seems like it would be my kind of movie. I've been trying to avoid spoilers about it, but it sounds like you are a little disappointed with it.

Although I've never actually heard a SubMersive, everything that I've read about them makes them my #1 dream pick, if I could ever afford a pair of them, which is highly unlikely in the near future. I have been checking out the Power Sound Audio subs online, and they seem like they might be a good choice for my budget range in the future. I know that they are made by a couple of guys formerly from SVS. Do you know much about them?

Isn't your screen hanging from chains? Couldn't you just raise the entire screen assembly a couple of inches so you don't have to angle your projector down?

Well I won't spoil the movie for you other than to say I'd rent it first if I were you or wait until it's in the $10 range, If your a real horro fan you might really dig it, not a huge cheesy horror fan myself.

Power Sound looks like an excellent place to start, who knows they may be good enough that you'll never want to replace them. The buzz around them seems good, although it seems like most people who have bought them so far it's their first real high performance sub so your bound to get a lot of "It's awesome!" comment s about it.

Are you thinking ported or sealed?

I'm not sure. I've never owned a sealed sub. From what I've read sealed subs are generally supposed to have a flatter overall response, better low-end extension, and a tighter quicker sound for music, right? I've also heard that ported subs are generally more efficient, and more muscular and punchy with movies. When you get into the realm of a top-end sealed sub like the SubMersive, I'm sure all of the negatives go out the window, but what do you think the real performance differences would be in a mid-level sub like the PSA's? They offer both sealed and ported subs.

I've never heard a really good ported sub before, at one time I had a pair of 12' ported Paradigm subs. They were ok, I'm sure the PSA ones are better.

If the budget allows it I'd go for multiple sealed subs to make up for the output ineffiencies vs ported subs. I've found it sounds somewhat unnatural with a ton of output coming from just one location.

Have you seen the preview for Sinister? Looks like it might be a decent horror movie.

Right now I have two 12" front firing rear ported subs. One is a Boston Acoustics HPS-12HO and the other is an Acoustic Audio HD-SUB12. When I do upgrade, I will be getting two matching subs. Although both of my subs have the same sized drivers and supposedly very similar power output, they do seem to have slightly different sound characteristics. The BA seems to be smoother yet more aggressive and doesn't seem like it's struggling as much and it goes deeper. The AA seems to have a bit more mid-bass and seems like it just doesn't hit as hard and it doesn't dig quite as deep. After a lot of experimenting, I've got them working pretty well together, but it seems like it would be much easier to balance two identical subs, and they would probably reinforce each other much better.

I know you can't always go by specs, but the PSA XS-15(sealed) is only rated down to 26hz (16-20hz typical in room extension) whereas the XP-15(vented) is rated to 21hz (16-18hz typical in room extension). That seems odd to me that the sealed one has possibly 10hz lower in room extension, but the ported one only has possibly 5hz lower in room extension. Also, the vented one weighs 19lbs. more. The sealed one is $50 less.

They are both down firing. I have only ever had front firing subs. Does it really make any difference?

I have only seen a very short preview on tv for Sinister, but it looks like it could be cool.

After my experience with the SubM and Empires I think it's a good decision on your part to go with matching subs. You can make it work but from my experience it sounds better when the subs are matching.

What kind of extension you'll get is really room dependent. The ported sub will drop off quickly below the ports tuning point where as the sealed subs shallower roll off will allow deeper extension if you've got room gain down low. The ported sub won't as dependent on room gain dow low.

Do you have any way to plot a graph to see what's happening in your room? I think HTG has a copy of the spread sheet required to use an spl meter and test tones. You should ask him about it.

Yeah, after my experience with using two different subs, I will definitely get matching subs next time. It took me quite a bit of trail and error to get my subs working together to where one didn't draw more attention to it.

I don't have any way to plot a graph right now. I don't have an spl meter. I got laid off from my last job a few months back and just started a new job about a month ago, and I still have a way to go to get caught back up, so I have to be careful with funds for a while.

It's actually probably going to be quite a long while before I can even think about upgrading my subs, and there are a few things that I'll probably upgrade first. I want to get some dipole surrounds to upgrade from my Polk M10's, I really need to get a good power conditioner, I'd also like to get some acoustic treatments for my room, and I should probably start thinking about saving up for a replacement lamp for my projector soon.

I really appreciate your advice, and I still like to discuss the stuff I'd like to get, even if I can't afford it right now.

Good evening Sir Mort, besides having to work Saturday how was your weekend? Mine was relaxing. I dread going back to work tomorrow.
Looking forward to watching the Simpsons tonight. I love their October cartoons.
