Default Appleseed Ex-Machina will include the Japanese language track...

http://www.animeondvd.com/news/archi...?datearch=0208

You can all rest easy now.

Quote:
Warner Botches Appleseed Packaging (02:39 PM EST): The Warner Home Video release of Appleseed: Ex Machina has been problematic in the last week or so due to poor solicitation information and now poor packaging. When the press releases came out last week, different sites had different information than what was on the PDF solicitation. The most notable was the lack of Japanese language options on these sites such as High Def Digest. The PDF solicitation only listed audio and subtitle options for the DVD and the impression given was that it would be the same on all other media (double disc set, Blu-ray and HD DVD). Yet for some reason sites were listing it without the Japanese language option and causing quite the stir.

We received our Blu-ray review copy from Warner today and we're very happy to say that it does include the Japanese language track as we expected it to from the solicitation information. What was surprising was that the packaging lists it as Japanese stereo. The Japanese release is being done on DVD and HD DVD only and they're getting 5.1 releases for it. Apparently this is yet another misprint on a Warner release as the Japanese track is actually a Dolby Digital 5.1 track at 640kbps. The menu option lists Japanese language - in Japanese only - but if you have your player set to pick Japanese as a default you'll be good.

Sucks that it won't include a lossless track, but I wasn't really looking forward to this anyway. I find 3D anime characters too creepy looking, and I prefer traditional handpainted cel animation.

Just watched the first 30 minutes of Gundam F91, which recently came out in Japan (no, no English dub or sub). Absolutely beautiful (except for the damn windowboxing that's prevalent in anime Blus).

Warner needs to get with the lossless audio and stop gaffing everything. I think I'll skip this one. I've never been a big Appleseed fan anyway.

Fans screamed for a Japanese track. They got it. Now you're screaming for a Japanese lossless audio track. If they delivered on that then someone else would come along and complain about the movie lacking something else.

Panics and stops panicing within a minute...

I just assumed it would come with the Japanese language track. I've had it on preorder for some time. Phew

I want Ghost in the Shell I & II in Blu as well. I really like mecha anime. The entire Robotech Macross series would be nice too.

Warner has been so clumsy lately! At least in a few months we won't have to worry about finding HD-DVDs in our Blu-ray cases anymore, like with Harry Potter.

They both are available in Blu.

As for Appleseed having Japanese 5.1, while I wish it was TrueHD like the Japanese HD-DVD version, the initial reviews seem promising for it. Can't wait for its release.

GitS 1 goes for 80-100$. GitS 2 for about 60-70$. They are quite a bit more expensive then a domestic release.
/off topic

Two reviews (one official and one preview post) seem to indicate the PQ is pretty good on this release, and the AQ isn't that bad. Hopefully if Appleseed sells well, WB might bring Brave Story over.

It's not Pony Canyon that's the issue. Even though PC is a part of the HD DVD PRG and have mainly released HD DVDs, they've still been neutral, and have also released several titles on BD, Air and Afro Samurai among them. This release was also announced back in early December, so in the middle of the format war.

Well, PC is still announcing DUDs, for example the KAGUYA moon mission footage is HD DVD only("with no Blu-ray announcement planned") and was announced post-Warner. They're also only releasing Appleseed on HD DVD. So while they have done a few Blus, it's obvious where their production heart stands for the immediate future

They canceled that one after the Toshiba announcement. Still no plans for Blu-ray announced, though.

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...80219/pony.htm

Appleseed Ex Machina was probably far enough along in production to not make it worth canceling.

Gaga also canceled their HD DVDs. They always released all titles in both formats and never leaned towards HD DVD like PonyCanyon, though.
