Question What is "Black Crush"?

Hey all! I'm still in transition, breaking into the blu-ray scene one disc at a time. I've stumbled across a few new terms & acronyms along the way (BD, PQ, PCM, etc), and have found my answers here for the most part. One term I havn't been able to sucessfully search for is "black crush" - I see it a lot in blu-ray reviews. Could someone explain what black crush means for me?

when you cant see details in the blacks : instead of gradations (shades) of black in dark areas of films, all you see is a murky dark mess.

otherwise known as your standard LCD rendition of black

I used to dread watching dark scenes in DVD and BD because my previous TVs all exhibited black crush, now with the Kuro all is well.

I can't stand LCDs for that very reason.

Black crush does not solely apply to tv's. In the reviews that you are referring to they reflect the quality of the transfer from the source material to the end product. The source material should have all those details in dark scenes, while a poor transfer can wash those out.

Excellent point kpkelley, garbage in garbage out still applies even with the best TVs.
