I'm glad to hear Brad Bird isn't doing it ... I know Im a minority but I really didn't like MI4 ... I'm a huge fan of the TV show ... 4 was an ok action movie but a terrible MI movie

Something tells me the Director for this will be a left-field choice, someone nobody saw coming. Dunno why, just a hunch.

(and No,I don't mean Uwe Boll!!)

Well, currently, the buzz is that Colin Trevorrow has had meeting with Lucas (but not Kennedy) and has hinted in interviews that his next project will be something that might "irritate a lot of fans".

I won't put all the links in because this is discussed extensively in this thread:

Does he have the experience though? That's the question.

His debut feature has received critical acclaim and it was on the strength of that that Lucas met with him. To have a man with such power interested in you through just one film is quite an achievement, whatever the result.

As those articles state, Kennedy wasn't present at this "chats" but the decision of who directs the next parts seems down to her, judging from the interviews that have been put on YouTube, so maybe this was just a friendly meeting and nothing more.

The thing is, whatever Trevorrow's experience, he seems the perfect fit for what both Kennedy and Disney wanted in the continuation of the series: fresh blood. He's an upcoming director who has had one hit and would probably give an arm and a leg to do something this big.

This article makes some interesting points on why a newcomer should helm this next part:

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/star...rs-episode-vii

You can pretty much ignore the part where he discusses Brad Bird because the director has admitted himself that he won't be doing it. He even discusses Trevorrow slightly.

United Kingdom It's not Colin Trevorrow

Not sure if everyone has heard but Trevorrow has released a comment on Twitter, which pretty much quashes the theories that maybe he would direct Episode VII:

Colin Trevorrow‏@colintrevorrow

To clarify, there is another film we all love that I'm currently trying not to mess up. Odds I will direct Episode VII: 3720 to 1.

Seems like everyone is scared to death of messing with Star Wars, and for good reason.

Star Wars fans, along Trek fans, are probably the fiercest in the galaxy, and it's impossible to please them all.

I am sure that has a little bit to do with it, but I think that is just the icing on the cake for why most directors want to avoid this thing. They may want to see a script first before saying "Okay, I'll do it." Usually it helps to know what you are getting into. "Outline by Lucas" means you don't have much creative control other than saying "Action!" and "Cut!"

Also, they have no guarentee that in ten years someone won't be altering the film they made, and that is a turn off for most major directors. Finally, you have to consider some of the directors on the "wish list" aren't on friendly terms with Disney (Tarantino as an example).

But it is what it is, a tough sell for A-List directors as they will find it very difficult to 'make it their own.' Everyone would love to see one of the geek-chic directors do this thing, but the problem is those director's have their own voices, and Star Wars doesn't really allow for that.

Sure there are more reasons behind it, but that's probably the main reason.

Tarantino on the wish list??? Hell NO!
He's not even worth mentioning to direct SW. Not even close.

That is probably the biggest reason that big directors have stayed away from this, like you said. Lucas, even in a small creative consultant role, will be enough to put some off - how can you direct a film that, ultimately, belongs to someone else? You would feel like you'd have to please him every day, do things how he might have done them and direct in his style (whether that be good or bad).

However, I'm not sure it's the only reason - I do think that some big directors would jump at the opportunity if they weren't busy with their own projects (Scott has Prometheus and Blade Runner sequels, Cameron has Avatar, Brad Bird has his pet-project 1906 and Spielberg doesn't want to do it because it's his best friend's life achievement). That, combined with the whole terror associated with directing such a huge and loved series, probably means that most big names will never even get near this...

...which, IMO, is for the best.

I agree - there are a lot of reasons to not do it. But then, if you are a true film fan and directors blood runs through your veins then getting a crack at SW might also be the most exciting thing to ever happen to you, even if you are a grizzled veteran director. It'd be a huge challenge and lots could go wrong. But, successful people are usually risk takers and thats what seperates them from us regular stiffs who take few risks but reap few rewards. Imagine someone being at the helm of a great EP7? How nice would that be to have on your career dossier?

All that being said, Id still like to see a young, upand comer try this. We shall see.

Case in point: Never mind how fast, how far do you want to paint a target outside of Skywalker Ranch, of just exactly where Quentin Tarantino would land, after being bodily kicked out the minute he tried to insert a 70's blaxploitation reference, Sergio Leone homage, David Bowie song, or long loving shot of Aurra Singh's feet?

(insert Two Towers clip of Wormtongue being pitched out the castle gate here)

Apparently, an ex-Lucasfilm employee has spilled the beans. With the amount of information released that turned out to be false or misleading recently, it might not even be true.

Sounds like their so-called source is fantasy, and the report is just based on Billy Dee Williams saying he'd be willing to return.

Everyone's turning down the directors chair...

Okay, okay. I'll do it.

There you have it. The official director of Star Wars VII is me! There's just a few changes I want to make to the galaxy, and it will require adding additional footage and effects to the first six movies. And I am envisioning big roles for Jar Jar and the Ewoks.

I'm not scared of screwing it up!

The job is yours as long as Kate Mulgrew plays Leia's (and Luke's) triplet sibling.
