Yeah, it's a recent event. There are rumors circulating he may show up in the movie too...it would definitely help sell 'Guardians' to the audience, to say the least.

Marvel, after reportedly hiring James Gunn as director, has begun the effort to cast Peter Quill, the Guardians leader who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father. I’m hearing that Marvel is making test deals with a small group of leading men. Here are the names: Zero Dark Thirty‘s Joel Edgerton, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, Cloud Atlas‘ Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace (who has roles in both Lincoln and The Hobbit), and Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables.

I’ve confirmed all of them are in contention but can’t say definitively that this list is all-inclusive as I’ve also heard of interest from or in Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden (he already played Cyclops in X-Men, but then again Chris Evans played Fantastic Four‘s Human Torch before landing Captain America) and Edgerton’s Animal Kingdom co-star Sullivan Stapleton. We’ll stay tuned, but this certainly means that Marvel and Disney are serious about launching new superhero franchises.

I'm sure he'll do fine. But the last thing the movie needs is this sort of black eye. Ticking off the fanbase is bad.

I'm not upset about it. Couldn't really give a flying fudge. Many comic fans however are up in arms. Which doesn't help the film.

And it's not the "Sex With Superheroes" thing. It's the distasteful comments he makes in regard to the choices.

Well, to be blunt. They need to pull their heads out their asses.

if internet or comic fans opinions really mattered or they were pissed off about something. The Transformers movies wouldn't have made what they made. Seeing how the choices that were either made to the characters (Flames on Optimus) or suppose Racist characters (The Twins)

When it comes down too it. It won't matter what the comic fans think or matter. Cause whether this movie fails or swims depends on the General Public's reaction to the film. Not like they're going to say" I read on the internet that the director of this movie said so and so. Meaning this must be a stupid movie I'm solely basing on something I read online"

Plus I'm sure directors have said thing about movies before. If you know anything about James Gunn, then you know the type of guy he is. and Marvel must be fine with him. Other wise they wouldn't have hired him.

So Just relax okay. They're just comic book characters at the end of the day.

Or, they...don't know the type of guy he is.
(Think they got him confused; there's this other James Gunn who directed "Super", so they had to rush out and get the indie superhero director, like every other studio, only they got the wrong one, and ended up getting the "Tromeo & Juliet" guy.)

It does not bode well for early pre-evaluations of Mr. Gunn's wit, subtlety or creativity.

(I mean, so Joel Schumacher goes around in the early press saying "Hey, Batman's a comic, you can't take it too seriously!"; it's just press talk, what could go wrong? )

Whilst I think it was a downright stupid thing for him to do, I don't think it hurts the film too much -- a lot of people aren't even aware of it (I wasn't) so it will have completely passed them by.

The problem is, when you're a film-maker, you need to have a certain amount of professionalism about you when you're making comments or articles on the Internet about anything. Posting an article about which superheroes you'd want to have sex with is probably one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard when you're about to direct one -- to me, it sounds like something that belongs on Cracked.com and not on a director's website.

The more I see things by James Gunn, the more I worry that he isn't actually a likeable person -- I've had a lot of respect for last two films, but between this and comments he makes on his YouTube channel, I do start to wonder whether he's become too much "YEAH, I'M JAMES GUNN SO I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT!".

I think they should go with Joel Edgerton. I like some of Lee Pace's works (The Fall, Pushing Daisies), but Edgerton's always great in all his movies. He deserves this big break.

James Gunn is a perfect choice for this movie. It needs to be out there and have a sense of humor about itself.
Nobody gives a crap about anything he's said in the past, and the "Sex with Superheroes" thing is not only FUNNY, but it lends additional geek credibility to him as a guy who knows about superheroes and isn't just a random director for hire.
