thanks guys. i do believe you all. i know that the ps3 doesnt do it yet. but like as you all said ps3 will support it in the future? thats all that matters. we know thats coming so thats fine by me. thanks so much for all your info.

my other question is....why is one "zipped" format better than the other if they are all the same? whats the point of having more than one compression if they are all the same?

why is all this new format shit all so confusing hhahaha damn!!!

I've read that it down-converts video to 720p. Can anyone confirm this?

????? and for good measure

It's video pass-through... what goes in, comes out... (unless you use a secret menu that upconverts 480 to 720.... I've heard mixed results on that though)

I think it just down-converts 1080i component feeds to 720p.
"The bad: Downconverts 1080i component video signals to 720p when outputting over HDMI; HDMI video quality converted from analog sources may not satisfy videophiles"

I was just trying to let you see for yourself that the 605 decodes TrueHD and DTSHD-MA.

As for the audio codecs, that is a VERY loaded question...They really should be the same. Some minor differences in how they are created/packaged but the main issue seems to stem from some TrueHD tracks use of Dialogue normalization and many don't like the results. I will bow out of any explanation beyond that.

Maybe give Sir Terrence's (Audio Insider) thread a read

Ahh.. To be honest I go in with HDMI and out with HDMI so I see HDTV in 1080i, PS3 games in 720p, and Blu-ray in 1080p. Never ran into this, but it appears to only occur with COMPONENT in and HDMI out. Apologies for my tunnel vision in response!

I've read many places that given the choice, 720p will provide a better picture than 1080i (720 lines put on screen at once vs. 540 interlaced with 1080i). I don't really have an opinion on that to be honest. Let me see what I can dig up on it.

Cnet's definition of 720p
"720p - 720 progressive. One of two currently used formats designated as high-definition television in the ATSC DTV standard, this technology comprises 720 vertical pixels and 1,280 horizontal pixels. The p stands for progressive, as opposed to interlaced, scanning, which is used in the other accepted HDTV standard, known as 1080i. Contrary to myth, 720p is not inferior to 1080i; 720p has fewer lines but also has the advantages of progressive scanning and a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines, making it better able to handle motion."
http://www.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-5107912-1.html

Not sure why the contradiction...

and here's something from here on it (a little inference is needed as 1080i and 1080p are being compared)

Does the 805 do what you are saying the 705 does? Also how is the upconversion of the video on the 705 is it worth it.

I've got the 605, i paid $400 from Vann's and at that price i felt i got a really good deal. It's a great machine. If your friend can get it for $250... all the better.

no it doesnt down convert... no one would buy something that did that.... the only thing this reciever is gonna make you do is buy better speakers i jsut got mine last week and all week ive been pricing speakers for it cus the ones i have just arent good enuf and if you dont have the hdmi cables to support it already buy from monoprice.com there dirt cheap make sure you buy 1.3 so you get the lossless audio from the ps3..

Question guys....Sony s300 to Onkyo 605 to Sony 40xbr2...all hook up with Hdmi(not 1.3)...what type of setting should I do with the S300 also speakers would be a set of Polk.

Thanks in advance...also what are the advantage of running Direct Tv HD dvr thru the 605 with Hdmi.

I prefer to use the 605 when I look at Bd's only but if it would serve a good purpose I would hook up the cable box to it.

Default TX-SR605 Firmware Update

I'm not sure if this has been posted already or not.

for both the TX-SR605 and TX-SR605S

http://www.onkyousa.com/605firmware_replace.cfm

A firmware update for the TX-SR605 is now available through Onkyo’s Independent Regional Service Centers. This update will address the product’s ability to decode the Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD High Resolution and Master Audio bit stream signals when products incorporating this capability become available in the market.

This update affects only a limited number of early production TX-SR605 units. Onkyo has included this update in all later production models. To determine if your unit is one of the few affected units please enter the 10 digit product serial number below

Ha. I ripped my serial number off. Thats fine though... Everything works fine on it.
I dont understand why they would put a big annoying white sticker on the top of a black receiver. Really...
Thanks for letting us know though. Anyone know how you even update the thing? I mean... theres no disc slot or memory stick reader for the receiver to read any update.
Im just curious.

"If your unit is eligible for this update, it will be done free of charge. You must follow the instruction on this and the following pages to receive the prepaid return mailing label. Units received without this label will not be processed. "

From that I guess you have to send it in and they will return it.

I feel the same way. There has to be away to do it yourself.

Or

Is it more physical upgrade then software alone.

I just purchased mine and have been debating on upgrading to the 805, If mine had needed this new firmware. I would have just upgraded instead of sending it back.

There's no standard external communication port on the 605 (e.g. Ethernet, RS-232, etc.).

I'm surprised that all makers don't put a USB port on their equipment nowdays. They could play music off it and make it a feature, and use that for firmware upgrades.
