me im gonna duck in and check out the 48fps eventually to see how it looks, but I wont be watching the whole movie that way.

I DID just watch the IMAX 9-minute Star Trek preview, and holy sh!tballs!!! That is the best 3D I've ever seen !!!
The 3D on that was really good. The Oz trailer looked awesome too.

That's unfortunate. Those were the issues they said would be reduced with HFR.

I don't have any issues with 3D in the theater or at home other than some minor discomfort from wearing active shutter glasses for more than 2 or 3 hours at home.

I'll be seeing this in HFR at noon today. I'll see if I can get projection system info for Penton Man's analysis.

I'll be sure to post my thoughts here tomorrow night (I've got a 5:40 MST showing)

Looks like this made about $13 million just from midnite showings. New December midnight opening. On track for a very strong opening.

It just the critics say the first part was boring and too long.

I didn't find it boring at all, with the prologue, Gandalf and Bilbo, and when the Dwarves showed up at Bilbo's house, and the start of the journey.

I liked the introduction to the characters and see how they are.

Who knows, maybe everyone will appreciate this when the trilogy comes to a close.

.
I just got back from seeing this.

48-FPS HFR is an absolute game changer!!!

I have been on the fence regarding 3D for a long while. However I am firmly on board now as long as its shown this way.
  • It took me about 30 seconds to adjust to the actors speed. In fact it was about maybe three scenes were I noticed a very slight quickness to them. After that it was all gone.
  • I did not notice the 'soap opera effect', or the 'BBC documentary' style one iota.
  • I did not notice any bad looking sets, props or makeup effects either.
  • I did not notice any problems with CGI effects blending in with live action with the exception of two scenes. And I have a VERY good feeling that those two scenes will have that problem with traditional 2D.

My recommendation:

If you have a choice of HFR or the other showings, you must choose HFR. Its worth it if you have to drive one hour to see it if you have too!

This movie SHINES in 3D-HFR 48FPS!

Again, its definitely a GAME CHANGER!

The one thing that I find is that this not only makes the 3D shine, but to me 48FPS takes CGI to the next level, too. It's a match made in heaven.Gollum was so incredible to look at,it was like he was really there. Often I felt like I was watching through a window, and that there was no screen at all.

I'd say this really takes movies to another level, just imagine an all-CGI movie like Avatar2/3 at 48FPS 3D.....

I'm trying to imagine movies in 5 years,4K 48 or 60FPS 3D... eyeball-melting time!!!!!

From all I've read and heard, the split is about 80/20 with the majority hating 48fps. Glad you enjoyed it, but it's no game changer. Most people just do NOT like it.

DEFENSIVE FANBOYS ALERT!!!!

"reliable data"?? There's no official "reliable data". I clearly stated that was the approximate split just from what I've read and heard - As in, all the reviews I've read online or in print (lots), reviews I've heard from friends, coworkers, or on radio (plenty of those too), and also reviews I've seen on TV (quite a few).

you wanna call it a "game changer", go ahead, but you cannot add "no doubt" because there certainly is doubt. Look outside your circle of friends and you'll hear PLENTY of negative takes on it.

This is what I feel is very strange.

I noticed almost none of the bad problems that the people who disliked it did. And believe you me, I sure was looking for them all through the movie. In fact if I had no idea that this movie was filmed at a higher frame rate I would have never known it. The only thing that I really noticed was the much improved FANTASTIC 3D.

So I am starting to wonder if maybe some of these theaters are not showing it right.

Yea I agree.

I have seen plenty reviews not liking it which I am finding utterly baffling.
