Been listening to Chicago sports coverage all day, the general consensus seems to be that win or lose, Lovie Smith will remain as head coach.

That surprises me. For weeks I've read that if Smith didn't make the playoffs he was gone, and some people said he not only needed to make the playoffs but also win a game to keep his job. 2013 is also the final year of Lovie's contract, and it's rare for a team to keep a lame duck coach. Usually they either give the coach an extension or fire the coach.

The players (Lance Briggs, Charles Tilman) have really rallied behind him in the media which I feel is important. I can definitely see them winning Sunday and with help from GB getting into playoffs, but anything further than that I'm leery. With or without Lovie, they need to completely dismantle and rebuild the offensive line this off season.

Didn't they clinch a playoff birth with their win over the 9ers Sunday?

While I agree with you, you can't really use that argument for the o-line. Manning will always have low sack totals because he gets rid of the ball quickly. It's not easy getting a sack on that guy. Luck has been sacked 40 times this year to Manning's 21.

Yes, the Seahawks clinched a playoff spot with their win against the 49ers on Sunday. If they win Sunday, the 49ers lose to the Cardinals, and the Packers lose to the Vikings the Seahawks would win the division and be the #2 seed. If they win, the Packers win, and the 49ers lose the Seahawks would be the #3 seed. They can't move lower than the #5 seed.

I'm hoping they grab the #2 seed plus I'd like to see the Vikings beat the Pack with AP breaking the rushing record. He really deserves the MVP this year.

Yeah, a running back winning the MVP award would be nice. I think the Vikings need to make the playoffs for it to happen though, record or not.

I'd like to see the Vikings win as well but even if they do I can't see the 49ers losing at home to the Cardinals so I'm guessing Seattle is pretty set as the #5 seed and a first round matchup at Dallas or Washington.

I just looked it up and a QB won 7 of the last 9 MVPs. Shaun Alexander and Tomlinson won in 05 and 06 respectively.

Yeah I'd call that 70-90% likely. They smoked up pretty bad in the first meeting this season too so even if we get past Washington I don't see us beating the Seahawks.

Both Alexander and Tomlinson set the total individual touchdown record in their MVP seasons, with Alexander getting 28 total touchdowns and Tomlinson breaking Alexander's record the next year with 31 total touchdowns (plus 2 passing touchdowns which don't count toward the record).

I was incorrect then since I thought about it a while back and I thought the last runningback to win MVP was that tool Marshall Faulk, guess not.

Yeah, the problem with firing Lovie is who's available to replace him? Does Sean Payton want to coach the Bears?
