Lincoln - Seen it

Zero Dark Thirty - Will see it this month
Life of Pi - Will see it when it hits Blu-ray

I guess I'm the "no one" that you're talking about.

I definitely understand your point and I agree with you. They need to give the $$ maker films (aka the #1 reason why movie theaters and movie studios are still in business) their due and recognition. I chuckle when I hear all the praise for a certain film from actors and directors alike...and the movie in question bombed at the BO and no one seems to talk about that much.

Love your Home Theater photos by the way. NICE!!! Cute little girl as well.

That is a horrible way to go about it. That's voting on quality by popularity. Under your criteria, The Transformer Trilogies and Twilight Franchise would've all been nominated for best picture.

I have seen these movies as well (Les Miserables being my fave...still have to see Zero Dark Thirty though). But I see what kurtis point is. They do need to give recognition to those films that did BIG $$ at the BO,imo. Not saying you need to GIVE them the Oscar...just at least a nomination. That would show recognition.

Maybe they can create another category?? Something like Best Box Office Movie??

I mean...how do you NOT nominate films like Avengers and Dark Knight Rises with the $$ they raked in at the BO??!!?? Again..not saying you give them the Oscar for best picture...but AT LEAST nominate them, imo. Skyfall was the biggest $$ maker of all the Bond movies ever made....how do you NOT recognize and nominate that??

That being said...Twilight Breaking Dawn II can be buried at sea as far as I'm concerned, lol.

Alot of people need to learn and know what the Oscars are.

it's not the movie that makes the most money or had the most fans. Mainly from a artist point of view.

Why there's such a thing called The People's Choice Awards. There the people can vote for whatever films they like.

They do have what you're talking about. They're called the People's Choice Awards. Home Alone II and Sister Act tied for Best Picture back in the 90's.

EDIT

MBFan beat me to it..

So happy Phoenix got a nom, I hope he wins, but 90% sure he wont. Also glad Hopper didn't get a director nom but shocked Bigelow didn't get in.

So the movie that makes the most should just get a award based on that? They will not give the Oscar to something critics hate like a Transformers or Twilight.

Beat me to it. Was saying Best Box Office as an idea or an example...not a viable one,lol

And I do undersand about The Peoples Choice Award and its purpose in comparison to the Oscars. I just think a NOMINATION should be considered, imo.

Why? Just cause it made alot of money? The Oscars is like High School Except the cool people are the outcasts and the lesser known people are the popular ones. if that makes any sense to you.

Like others have said, there are other award shows. I'm sure when people make certain movies they know they won't be winning any oscars for it. Nor do they probably care.

Recognized for making money? I think it's borderline sick that American culture values works of art based on their revenue grosses versus their contribution to culture in the first place, now you're suggesting we amplify that and give awards to films based on their earnings?

I'm totally on board with complaints about the prejudice against well-produced genre films, simply due to their genre - don't misunderstand - but I'm 100% against giving awards to films simply because boat loads of early-pubescent tweeners and hormonal lonely female teenagers were driven to Twilight by their parents, weekend after weekened.

I don't watch alot of Oscar nominated films, but I know how things work. the Oscars are all about film making and everything that comes with it.

Having a category for a film that makes so much money sounds like a MTV Movie Awards thing. it's simple if you don't like the movies nominated don't watch them or the Oscars.

So happy to see Beasts of the Southern Wild with so many nominations, especially Quvenzhané Wallis for Lead Actress!

Fingers crossed it can knock out Lincoln, and I think it may have a chance. If Slumdog Millionaire and Crash and The Hurt Locker can win Best Picture, this definitely has a chance!

I'm just saying it gets old....the academy seems to always pick the films that no one has seen! The Artist anyone!!!!! And we all know of all of the upsets in Oscar history....

Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas
Ordinary People over Raging Bull
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan
Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark
Crash over Brokeback Mountain
The Hurt Locker over Avatar
The English Patient over Fargo or Jerry Maguire......Just to name a few!!!

Game over. Dances With Wolves was a surprise box office smash. Everyone went to see that, far more than Scorsese's violent R-rated character study of an 80's gangster. And DWWs popularity has led to the envy, jealousy, and backlash against it. By your own standards, it should have won. Same thing with Raging Bull and Ordinary People. Mary Tyler Moore playing an evil ice queen of a mother inflicting psychological harm on her son versus a character study of a violent slob of a boxer. Everyone pisses on Ordinary People now, because it won over Scorsese, but at the time, no one was shocked when it trumped Scorsese. It was more popular, it was more moving, it touched people.
