I can't believe a movie containing an Oscar winning performance and starring two still-bankable Hollywood leading men is viewed as a niche title.

It's just not right no matter how you look at it. Creating an artificial demand by limiting it to 3000 and charging a high price. Sorry to take another TT thread in this direction but I just hate seeing great popular films going through these guys because more people can't enjoy these films in high definition.

Right. A movie that still hasn't sold out and probably never will (I know! If it had a $15 MSRP, Sony would sell MILLIONS). Someone might as well just duplicate the As Good As It Gets thread and rename it, because this is just the same old stuff....

So, is there any chance that TT will have the extras for this or will it definitely be a barebones release?
Normally, I'd simply assume it would be barebones, but I was reading the Christine thread and I believe they mentioned they were hoping to get the rights to the commentary. Do we have to just wait until the release to find out? Again, I only own one TT release and I just assumed they NEVER get the extras, which was one of the plethora of complaints along with price and limited copies. It's one thing to ask a premium price like Criterion, it's quite another to deliver that product with not even the extras included on the dvd. I certainly can make a combo, I'd just rather not have to. |

Now, item 2 gives those of us that do know about the TT releases more time to purchase a copy, if you haven't already, but as time goes on more and more people are learning about TT. Now, that's good for TT but at some point in the future, assuming awareness of TT continues to grow, we, the buyers, might just have to be quick on the draw to get the titles we want. |

Niche movies take an effort by distributors to find their fans. Studios preoccupied with next summer's blockbusters and next fall's Oscar-contenders would rather not bother with the effort. If we're lucky, they'll find a place like Twilight Time, Olive, or Criterion willing to do it as well as trying to release a quality product fans will appreciate. Sometimes they'll just dump titles with a mass-market budget distributor like Mill Creek, with hit-or-miss quality. And those few classic titles the major studios even bother to release are pretty hard to find on the shelves at any video store. Those who want them must find them through on-line sources. Those who just browse video departments at Walmart, Target, Kmart, and Best Buy never even realize they've been released. At least now the people who want to get PHILADELPHIA on Blu-ray will have a chance. Those who don't really want it, won't. |

Also, I'd raise hell if Twilight Time got a hold of distribution rights for The (First) Great Train Robbery and some other releases. Glad Sony/Columbia are actually smart enough to release Lawrence of Arabia through theirselves. Now to get the version I really want to buy eventually. No, I won't pay a fraction of a cent to this company for any of their releases. |
