Ive seen this phenomenon for a while now, and I'd like your opinion on it. I searched the threads and did find one from 2010 with like 4 replies.
So I made my own. If they are done quite quickly I kind of like them, but if it's a long drawn out 1 disc-no artwork disc, then please don't have the video last 3 minutes. Thoughts? |

I have watched a handful, but only for unique/rare packaging where I want to see the contents of an item that I may not be able to easily acquire, or if I'm on the fence about upgrading to a premium edition. Regardless, shorter is better. I normally don't even listen to the audio and will skip ahead to the actual reveal, since I am rarely interested in hearing someone talk about the slipcover as they run their greasy fingers across it for five minutes.

I'm mixed on them. I like seeing the packaging on them and seeing what the cover and disc look like, but they also make me feel like a pathetic loser just by watching them (then again, I am on a Blu-Ray forum. No offense guys.) Not to mention that they can take away from the magic of opening a Blu-Ray when you finally get it and they just make me wish I had a bigger collection (these guys usually have a lot of Blu-Rays.)

Unboxing videos are essential for many of my BD purchase. Sometimes you need to know certain details about a release, and unboxings are the easiest and fastest way of knowing. One example is if you're buying a Digibook from say France or Germany, you might look for an unboxing on YouTube to see whether the text is in English or the native language. If you want a Steelbook, you might look to see how good the paint job is, whether it has inside art, etc...If you want a Box set you might look to see how the discs inside are packaged. Additionally, sometimes looking at someone's unboxings makes me inclined to get a BD release I wouldn't have considered, (the same happens with the Post your haul thread). There's really any number of reasons. I don't really know why people would just be flat out against them, they're not really hurting anything by being there

I have a habit of leaving the shrinkwrap on my discs with slipcovers, so I check for weird packaging like Social Network just last week. Like I thought, paper over the cover, slice the sides and slide out the digi, the rest stays together. Plus cardboard slips don't get scuffed when the wrap stays on.
99% of the time I don't bother. I did go back to see what I missed with Watchmen UE though. |
