I think they were trying to mirror those 3D posters that were in some theaters. I bet the slipcover will have that same effect (with the leaves movin' and stuff). I like both....but I understand ya.

Not touching this release with a barge-pole for the simple reason that i never understood why the Theatrical Editions were so basic and 'low rent' in thier Special features, as opposed to the Extended Editions which goes the whole hog?

And also, i'm really trying to work out why Warner are releasing this a mere THREE MONTHS after the film was in cinema's. Seriously, my local cinema is still showing the film and yet the BD is due out in 5 weeks time? Is this some End Of The Tax Year scheme or something, Warner?

And finally, if the previous films had the Theatrical Version released after 6 months and this is three, can we then expect to see the Extended Verion's release date ALSO truncated and out in June or July?

Luckily they have WIKIs for this sort of thing.

Additions to the Theatrical versions of the films below (hardly trivial additions and worth having the extended editions for the additional depth to story and characters):

The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Isildur's death.
  • Bilbo's opening narration "Concerning Hobbits".
  • Bilbo at the party scene avoiding the Sackville-Bagginses.
  • Bilbo and Frodo's dialogue at the party scene, while avoiding the Sackville-Bagginses.
  • The Hobbits at the Green Dragon Inn.
  • A conversation between Ted Sandyman, Hamfast Gamgee, Old Noakes, Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins.
  • Frodo and Sam seeing Wood Elves making their way to the Grey Havens on their first day of their journey across the Shire.
  • The crossing of the Midgewater.
  • Aragorn singing "The Lay of Lúthien".
  • Sam shows Frodo the trolls when they are at Trollshaws.
  • Gandalf reciting Black Speech at the Council of Elrond.
  • Aragorn visiting his mother's grave.
  • The Fellowship given a goodbye at Rivendell.
  • Gandalf warning Frodo about Boromir near Moria.
  • Lothlórien panorama added.
  • Sam's poem about Gandalf's fireworks.
  • The Fellowship members have flashbacks from when they were given their gifts from Galadriel.
  • Celeborn and Aragorn have a conversation in a flashback.
  • Aragorn and Boromir seeing Gollum behind a floating log.
  • More of Merry and Pippin defending Boromir at Amon Hen
  • Fan Club credits.

The Two Towers
  • Sam using his Elvish Rope to help him and Frodo rappel down a cliff; and a clip in which it is raining on them.
  • Pippin believes that Merry is wounded and asks the uruk-hai to give him some water. Instead they give him orc draught to drink.
  • Extra dialogue concerning Sauron's buildup of forces, gathering of allies, plotting, etc.
  • Éomer finds his cousin mortally wounded and brings him to Edoras.
  • Gríma exiling Éomer is extended.
  • The encounter between orcs and Uruk-hai is extended.
  • The funeral of Théodred.
  • The encounter between Treebeard and the hobbits Merry and Pippin is extended; there is also a scene in which Merry and Pippin stay drunk only to hear the powerful voice of the Ent, almost falling off Treebeard's body.
  • Merry and Pippin drink Ent Draught (which makes them grow a few inches taller).
  • Merry and Pippin get attacked by Old Man Willow and Treebeard saves them.
  • Gandalf and Aragorn talk about Frodo's fate on their way to Rohan.
  • Some humorous scenes, such as one in which Eowyn (who is an awful cook) serves a plate of terrible stew to Aragorn.
  • Aragorn reveals his age to be 87 in a conversation with Eowyn.
  • Faramir finds the boat carrying the body of his brother Boromir; which brings him many memories that help to explain in detail his relationship with his father Denethor and Denethor's unsympathetic and almost hostile attitude towards his younger son, Faramir.
  • Faramir and Boromir at Osgiliath.
  • Denethor sending Boromir to Rivendell to find out about the Secret Council called by Elrond and (presumably) the One Ring.
  • Legolas and Gimli comparing their Uruk-Hai kill count after the Battle of Helm's Deep.
  • Flotsam and Jetsam is a new scene where Merry and Pippin find food and Longbottom Leaf in Isengard.
  • Extended Scene of Sam's Speech at Osgiliath.
  • Faramir shows the hobbits the way out of Osgiliath.
  • Fan End Credits

The Return of the King
  • The final confrontation between Gandalf and Saruman on Isengard; Saruman's staff breaks and he is stabbed in the back by Gríma Wormtongue, who is shot with an arrow by Legolas; Saruman falls from Orthanc and is impaled in a war machine. His palantír falls on the water and is found by Pippin.
  • The drinking game between Legolas and Gimli
  • The Mouth of Sauron
  • The fighting between Gandalf and the Witch-king of Angmar in Minas Tirith.
  • Extended scenes of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields
  • The march of Frodo and Sam between the orcs
  • Faramir telling Denethor that he would never use the One Ring (in a flashback on which Boromir appears).
  • Aragorn seeing the fleet of Corsairs ships.
  • Faramir and Eowyn in the Houses of Healing
  • Merry offering his services to King Theoden
  • Aragorn revealing the sword Anduril to Sauron in a palantír.
  • Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli barely escaping from an avalanche of craniums when they are negotiating the alliance with the Dead.
  • Faramir and Pippin having a passionate conversation in Minas Tirith.
  • Gollum and Frodo struggling on Mount Doom.
  • Sam threatening Gollum about Frodo on the secret stairs to Shelob's Lair.
  • Fan End Credits
  • New song called "Bilbo's Song" added to the closing credits

FOTR had 30 minutes added.

TTT had 42 minutes added.

ROTK had 50 minutes added.

You'd have to be blind to not see the differences.

I can see that happening too, but even a lenticular cover couldn't make that boring Gandalf image interesting lmao

Okay, seriously, what is going on with the pre-orders for this? Earlier this morning the 3D version was available from Amazon and now the image has been taken down and the pre-order has been pulled... again. Exactly what they did with the 2D pre-orders a few days ago. If Warner Bros. has officially announced it, then what is stopping Amazon from taking pre-orders? And why do they keep putting them up, just to take them down a few hours later?

My guess would be that the lenticular Gandalph image alternates with the Bilbo close-up that adorns the cover of the DVD edition. They can't simply have a non-hobbit character on the cover of a movie called The Hobbit

I'll be buying this on day one. The extended edition supposedly won't be released until around the middle to the end of November which is eight months between this one and that one. Once the extended version is released, I'll just sell this one and put the money towards the new one.

I figure this one will be available for $15~$20 for the 2D version, and I'll probably be able to sell it for $7~$10, so I look at it like an eight month rental for $5~$13.

I'm probably just going to be getting the regular 2D Blu-ray... I don't have a 3D TV (nor do I plan on ever getting one) and since they have the same features and everything, I won't be missing anything. Usually I'll pick up the 3D version if they throw in like a digital copy or something or an extra Blu-ray disc of bonus features (I've bought the 3D versions of Tangled, Lion King, and Dark of the Moon for extra stuff).

Can't wait though, loved the movie and I'm glad it's coming out so soon on Blu-ray so I can watch it whenever I want!

But of course the point of getting a BD is to get the movie on BD, but the Special Features are equally important to me. I enjoy watching a movie, and then the making. It just adds so much to the movie viewing experience. And the PiP or the MMM mode makes movie watching more interesting, which, unfortunately is absent here. I hope PJ adds it to his extended edition. He had done it for King Kong (only Extended Edition). So, fingers crossed.

The BBFC have rated the New Zealand: Home of Middle-Earth feature and it runs 6 minutes 15 seconds.

With regards to the 3D cover, Empire Magazine in the UK released a series of lenticular covers for their Hobbit issue and this was one of them - and the best out of the 5. It really works well as a lenticular design so I'm very pleased they chose it.

If only it was Radagast on the cover of the 3D version, especially the scene where he smokes pipe weed. Still don't approve of the cover, though I understand it will have a great lenticular effect. The movie is called 'The Hobbit' not 'The Wizard'.

Yeah, the additions are certainly not minor. Most minor in FOTR I suppose, but blatantly obvious in the final two films.

in regards to all the reinstated scenes in 'The Two Towers' I must say the one addition that isn't listed but is my favourite is the orcs running away from Helm's Deep and getting 'devoured' by the Tree-Ents - it's memorable in the book and I'm glad Jackson filmed it and included it in the extended cut.
