Memento and Inception were Nolan's best IMO.
To say he's overrated is unfair because he's never made a bad movie and he can handle many different types of film like his work on Following. I would really love to see him direct another movie when Man of Steel comes out. |

Fan boy?... why? he isn't my favorite director. I'm simply a fan of movies and since his have been released we have seen something that is not only different but pays homage to movies of the past while being different.
I'm not the person people are describing. I like to think I know a little about movies but you don't have to hate everything to be a proper movie fan. You don't have to watch Casablanca at least once a week and complain about actors "not being what they used to be" Don't be a stereotype then accuse me of being just this. The Dark Knight trilogy are just movies, very good movies but still.. just movies. I rate nolan but don't ever call me a fan-boy of anything. I like to think that I'm a little more mature than that. Also, I have never even seen Memento. I admire nolan's style - you don't. Guess what? You're on the internet, you'll find that lots of people have different opinions to you. My favorite director, by the way, is James Cameron (I wont call him Jim as I don't pretend that I know him) I hated Titanic yet still accept that it is a classic. Don't ever call me names though, not unless I call you them first. It's wrong, it's disrespectful and it hurts. Quote:
-- no longer aimed at you; I hate how people bad mouth this movie simply because they added a non comic character. |

I'm not sure if you're aware of this but comparing the worst film in my collection to The Dark Knight Rises doesn't do your side any favors. And it's not like the two are actually all that comparable in any way. Probably one of the lamer attempts I've seen from a Batman fanboy to silence all criticism against his God (Nolan).

Anyway, you called Nolan's style "flawless". How am I supposed to react to that? If his style is perfection, then where does that leave directors such as Hitchcock and Kubrick? I'm not trying to hurt your feelings but c'mon, who else but a fanboy would legitimately argue this? Last edited by metaridley; 02-09-2013 at 10:31 AM. |

You seem to forget that this all opinionated. TDKR wasn't awful. You just didn't like it. Some people really like it. Some fans were really pleased.

I think he certainly gets too much unabashed love, but he's still a very smart screenwriter and strong aestheticist (although the similarly "cutty" Tony Scott/ Michael Mann/David Fincher are more assured visual craftsmen) that I think his work is nonetheless interesting and he should be "rated" to some degree. |

Like I said above, some of the directing was pretty awful. Nonetheless, its a still somewhat of a success considering it may be the most "plotty," heady and politically charged of all superhero flicks. (don't say Watchmen because Snyder doesn't have an intelligent thought in his head)

How dare you? Get out! [/sarcasm]
![]() Seriously? Avatar was hyped up a little (to say the least) but I don't think he's ever made a "bad" movie. I wont take your opinion away from you though - or attempt to, rather. I am a little biased though [looks left] |

How can someone that never gets any praise be overrated? If anything he gets trashed a little more than he should. I'm in no way saying he's great, but I've literally NEVER heard any praise for the guy as a director(and I follow him on Twitter, but don't even see him retweeting praise) so I don't get how he can be overrated.

In terms of Nolan. He isn't overrated. He just has a massive amount of fans so it makes it seem that way but he's rated as he should be. He makes intelligent blockbusters, which is rare nowadays, and is one of the best directors working today for sure. Is he Paul Thomas Anderson? No. Darren Aronofsky? No. But I don't think anybody claims that except for his fanboys. The man has never won an Oscar and most of his films don't get nominated for any awards so he definitely isn't "overrated". He's justly rated, lol.
Anyways, overrated directors would definitely be The Wachowski "siblings". They've been hanging around for too long. I don't know why they are still making movies. One good film and that's it for these two. No consistency with them at all. I'd also say Spike Lee. He's way more miss than hit. Gus Van Sant. Again, way more miss than hit. They both seem to get respect though which I don't understand. Lars von Trier makes bold movies but that isn't a reason alone to be respected. I find that he gets way more respect than he deserves. |

The Wachowski siblings aren't as good as they used to be but I heard Cloud Atlas was okay and it looks pretty epic. I think they could still dish out another good Matrix if they get their shit together. Gus Van Sant directed one of my favorite movies ever Drugstore Cowboy. Now he does kind of suck but screenplays are becoming more and more important in film and I don't think he trusts the right writers anymore. Now Lars Von Trier is where I have to get biased. ![]() |

I like nolan. I like his style. I know he didn't "invent" the way he directs but nonetheless I like it. I personally rate the Prestige as his best. A lot of people would call it his worst but that isn't why I like it - I just do. I enjoyed it more than his other pictures.

But I gave it a second look some months later was very impressed with how brilliantly it captured the spirit of the cartoon. And even that didn't really hit me right away. I was about halfway through the second viewing when it all sort of came together. And the sampling over the end credits was almost itself worth the price of the disc. |
