+1. The exciting thing is the unknown, it's like being on a treasure hunt lol. I just went last week and found Along Came Polly from the UK, I was really surprised to see it there. I went to FYE today and also found some oldies but goodies for cheap.

No, they did not come with slipcovers. Steelbook appeal I can understand but what is the appeal of the slipcover?

Some slipcovers come with some beautiful artwork on them.

Some glow in the dark

Some have a great 3d effect

Didn't buy anything, but I'm seeing a trend at local pawn shops that I've yet to see at other used stores. Plenty of blu rays in PS3 cases. I'd never come across this before until walking into pawn shops for the first time in years.

I used to go to the Pawn Shops for DVDs all the time, but once BD started coming out and I started buying those exclusively there has been a period of years where it wasn't really worth it anymore. Like, I'd go and I didn't want DVDs anymore, but the BDs they had were just some of the newly released titles that I'd never want to own especially at what the shops were charging for them to start with.

I think it's time I get back into it since I have a feeling things are starting to level back out to where I can find deals again.

I always think to myself about the poor suckers who sold them or pawned them in the first place. They can't possibly be getting hardly anything for them at all. I wish I could find THOSE people and just buy them direct, lol.

It's been a while (~10-11 years ago), but I once was in a pawn shop when a guy brought in a garbage bag full of dvds to sell off and he apparently had a few words with the broker who wasn't offering him squat. So I talked to him and negotiated a deal off the property for about twice as much money and still came away with screaming deals at the time. Picked up a ton of tv box sets for like $8 a piece back then that were normally no less than $50+ each. But times like that are extremely coincidental and rare.

Best finds I've gotten is:
Bourne Trilogy $5
Fantastic Four / Elektra Director's Cut / Daredevil Director's Cut (in one case) $4
Most my shops still want $8 - $10 a movie and the shops that are cheap usually don't have nothing.

I just recently found:

The Watch and Cinderella for $5 a piece.

I also picked up a $1 copy of Jaws 2 on DVD for fun!

I don't even know if I should mention this, but it has been so many years ago now I don't see much harm in it by this point. Do any of you remember the websites zTradingPost.com and SuperPawn.com? They were websites that listed the entire inventory for an entire chain of pawn shops (of the same Super Pawn name) and both websites had the exact same inventory. Oh how I have fond memories of that site.

I made a part time work at home living for years as I helped raise two nieces when my brother went through a divorce. I did research on every DVD that was OOP and tracked the prices on eBay and the such and every single day I would search for every OOP title there was at the time on that pawn site. I had that site so figured out that I had it pinpointed to the second when they updated their daily inventory. I was buying OOP titles every single day for almost nothing, just $2-$5 for most items, and then listing them on eBay. This went on, and on, and on for at least two or three years. I can't even count how many copies of different things I bought and then sold during that time.

I found out about it after just randomly doing an online search for "online pawn shop" since it was right when I was starting to collect DVDs for my personal collection and was looking just for deals for myself. I found the site, searched for a few things, and it was like a freakin' goldmine to me. I still have a few things I bought just to own in what is left of my DVD collection, including a few of my Criterions.

I believe the Cash American Pawn chain bought them out, and at that time they ended the entire online inventory setup, but my GOD it was the best thing ever back then. Surely someone else out there remembers this.

The going price for me seems to be $5 at my local shops. Not the best for some titles especially when you consider Best Buy's U&S deals. Now when a new release shows up at that price its great (as well as rare titles, foreign, those that never drop in price - High Road to China I'm talking about you )

This thread prompted me to contact the main pawn shop here in town and they are still asking for at least $10 for every BD, ugh. I called another one and they don't have any DVDs at all, much less any BDs at all.

I've visited about 6 shops so far and half of them were firm on the $10 each, one would do $7/each, another $6/each, and another $5/each. Seems the ones closest to me are always the ones that are the most expensive. Probably visiting them again now more out of nostalgia than outright bargains. It was a (nearly) weekly ritual in the early 2ks for me to find $5 or so dvds when they were like 3x that in WM and the media stores in the mall.

Only score I ever got was The Leopard Criterion Collection on DVD for $4 once. When I lived in a nothern Chicago burb, the Goodwill we went to was money. Find there include the entire Six Feet Under series dvd box set sealed within 2 months of release for $25, 3 years worth of Emmy screeners for $10 and around 15 Disney animated BR's for $3 each.

The two I posted that were $8 - $10, I went to today to check them out for the heck of it. The one that was $10 are now $6 but didn't have anything. The other one that was $8 are now $5 but they are having their annual clearance sale so they were actually $4 each (I didn't have the money to spend alot but did end up with a few finds.)
Madea's Family Reunion
Stand by Me (25th Anniversary Edition) (sealed)
Die Hard Collection (old one - had but bought to trade)
Fringe: The Complete Third Season
I almost didn't go there today but so glad I did.
