Hi,
I just hooked up my PS3 yesterday. I got a question about the video and audio setup. PS3 automatically detect the optimal video setting and determines that 1080p would be the best resolution for my TV. Now I know that my Panasonic Plasma only goes up to 10801. Why does PS3 think that my TV can do 1080p? Should I manually adjust it so PS3 output would be 1080i instead of 1080p? Second question. My PS3 also automatically detect the optimal audio setting. It came back with Linear PCM 2.0 options all checked and 5.1 options checked up to 96khz setting . None of the 7.1 options selected. I have Denon AVR-3806 with 6.1 speakers. Should I select the 7.1 options? Should I also select any of the option for above 96khz setting? Thanks in advance. |

You could manually setup the PS3 to the 1080I setting. I presume you hooked it up using the HDMI link since you cannot achieve a 1080P without it. Secondly I would use the Fiber Optic cable for your audio, This should fix the second issue, If i remember correctly PCM 2.0 is similiar to Dolby Pro Logic? You want Dolby Digital or DTS and this cannot be setup using standard RCA cables. Remeber the HDMI link carries audio but if it does not connect into your reciever the audio is only going to the speakers at the TV.

I should probably clarify a little more. I connected the PS3 to the receiver using HDMI for both audio and video. From what I have read, DD plus and DTS HD can not be passed via optical cable, only HDMI.
It's true that my receiver does not exactly support them but again from what I've read on dts.com <http://dts.com/dts-hd/dtshd-master-audio-with-existing-receiver.php> the PS3 built-in DTS HD decoder would process the audio data and pass it to the receiver, resulting in DTS HD outpout to the speakers. Am I wrong ? Back to my initial question, should I select the PCM Linear 5.1 above 96khz and 7.1 (since I actually have 6.1 speakers) ? Thanks. |

Edwin, I'm not sure about your video setting. I'd try adjusting manually to see what it gives you and just leave it at that. As far as the audio; your running the best method which is via HDMI. You should be able to get most all of the codex's decoded (via ps3) using the HDMI. As far as the setting on the PS3, i was only under impression there was a "bitstream" and a "pcm" setting. I again would do some trial and error, you should see on your receiver when playing a blu-ray movie which channels are coming thru (on left side of your rcvrs display).
good luck |

It turns out that the audio setting that I was asking was actually under the system setting->audio setting, not under BD setting as I was implying earlier. BD audio setting only has the option of either PCM or Bitstream. I guess the audio setting under system setting is only for PS3 games? I don't know...
Anyway, I selected PCM for BD audio setting, and I checked all the available options for the audio setting under system setting. ![]() I was watching Rocky Balboa yesterday with the uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio. My Denon receiver shows "Multi Channel" output on its display, got audio from all of my 6 speakers and also the subwoofer. I think the quality of the sound is somewhat better than the regular 5.1 DD from the regular DVD. It's louder for sure... ![]() |

Quick question....I was over at my friend's house yesterday helping him setup his new PS3....connected via Component to his Sony 40XBR700(no HDMI)......we just popped in T2 and it played.......after I left, I started wondering if the video needed to be set up to output 1080i or if this was automatic.....I'm planning to buy a PS3, but don't have one yet......

I think when I turned on my PS3 for the first time, it automatically asked if I want to have PS3 determine the optimal video setting automatically or if I want to adjust manually. I could be wrong though... But either way, I think PS3 should automatically use the highest resolution posibble based on the connection. In my case, it automatically selected 1080p eventhouh my TV only supports up to 1080i. I then manually changed it to 1080i.

Thanks for the info. We were in such a hurry to get the thing running (my friend has no patience), downloaded the latest SW (1.6).....so I don't remember what the first questions were that came up.
All I know if that once the SW downloaded, we inserted the movie and it played. The TV is only capable of 1080i and only has Component Input. The picture looked great, however I will re-look at it next time I'm over to double-check the output. Thanks all for your help. |

What is the best I can do for audio with my PS3 if the HDMI is going straight to the video display? FYI: I have a Cary processor without HDMI for now (their newest Cinema 11, but it has a supposed future-proof connector on the back that may allow for expansion and future surround modes, but who knows?). The Cary Cinmea 11 does have optical and coax digital inputs. I know the PS3 only has optical, and that doesn't pass the best audio. Even so, for the future, if I were to always have a processor that did not include video switching but say it does have an HDMI input (I also have a Naim AV2 in another set-up that is only audio, no HDMI of course), how can I get the best audio out of the PS3 with only one HDMI output? Will they ever make it with 2 HDMI outs? Can you split the HDMI out?

You can split the HDMI signal off the PS3 but the output going into the receiver doesn't handle SACD's PCM. even when you're using a HDCP-compliant HDMI splitter. This is as far as my experience goes. fuad |
