* Because it often uses Dialog Normalization, Dolby TrueHD is ranked below DTS-HD MA. DTS-HD MA also tops out at a theorectical maximum of 24.5 mbps vs only 18.0 mbps for Dolby TrueHD.

** Because of Dialog Normalization and lower bitrates (448 kbit/s) Dolby Digital 5.1 is ranked below DTS (768 kbit/s or 1536 kbit/s depending on the movie)
There is a lot of debate about dialog normalization and it apparently is present in DTS-MA -- just in a different way.

I agree with your analysis for the most part, I would say that on most movies and too most listeners with consumer level equipment:

Uncompressed PCM = TrueHD = DTS-MA

You forgot to mention Dolby Digital Plus (a very common codec on the HD DVD side -- less common in Blu Ray). DD+ and DTS-HD (Lossy) are probably about equal (although I have never seen a DTS-HD lossy track on a disc in any format).

DTS is the best of the old school formats (BTW -- several HD DVDs have DD+ and DTS at 1.5mbs -- i.e., Chronicles of Riddick and Interpreter, and most reviewers say that that DD+ beats regular DTS in depth and sound quality).

DD is the bottom as you say.

Ick ... don't buy a Sony receiver ... ever!

At the consumer level there are three very high quality receivers in the game ... and then the rest.

Stick with Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha.

I have one of each -- and they are all great. Right now Onkyo receivers are offering the best feature set at the best price.

That is basically like saying -- which will do better unpacking a zip file, my desktop or my laptop? The output will be the same (or so nearly -- that it will not matter -- assuming you believe in "judder").

AQ will be much more limited by receiver and speaker quality.

Finally! I can't wait! My Fox titles will be amazing with the ability to decode DTS-MA. I hope this happens sooner rather than later.

Funny way to discripe it

The only thing i do not like about the ps3 does the decoding is:

That is can't see the DTSMA and DDtruHD lights on my Onkyp 705 lit up

There are BD's that have DTS-HD , I think the movie "Condemned" has 7.1 DTS-HD. There are others I'm just having a 'brain fart' . DTS-HD sounds better than DD+....to me anyway...& I hope we get DTS-HDMA very soon !!!The PS3 will be unstoppable

I did'nt forget... it was a conscious and deliberate ommission --> why mention a CODEC that is as dead and burried as it's delivery system (HD DUD)

I'm not aware of ANY Blu-Ray containing such audio CODEC and even if there are a few... they probably also contain a superior lossless CODEC as well... making discussion about Dolby Digital Plus a pointless endeavour (we don't catter to the Dudders here ). Dolby Digital Plus, just like HD DUD, is better left forgotten and never spoken of again

You can also throw Marantz & Harman Kardon in there for good Quality Recievers. Marantz SR4002 is a nice Reciever for around $500. (Harmon\Kardon I would wait for the new 255 & 355 models to come out with Hdmi 1.3)

DD+ is an approved encode for Blu Ray. Up to authoring studio to include it. The reason HD DVDs have it so often is because DD+ is a min spec, all players are required to decode it (as well as TrueHD). So the studio knows that most viewers will be able to enjoy the HD audio. I wish the min specs on BR players were similarly clear -- but they are not.

Take a look at "Assassination of Jesse James" and "Michael Clayton" -- both excellent movies (really excellent). Blu Ray versions contain a regular Dolby Digital track only (and no lossless or next-gen HD track -- the horror), whereas HD DVD have DD+ encode. While granted they may be at the same or similar bit rate. I would go with the DD+ encode given the choice. I rented both (on HD) and found their sound imaging great (Jesse James was really excellent).

Added Condemned to my Blockbust Que (long wait ... of course).

I will avoid Marine until I happen to be trapped on a plane or something similar and I am forced to view it.

Stone Cold has has more charisma in his pinky that Ceena (sp?) in his whole body.

DTS, Core is 1.5mbps , so NO your not enjoying the best of it......yet, but soon any HDMI receiver & PS3 will be able make magical sounds together & deliver PCM, Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HDMA. Those are the (3) BIG DOG's

Yes on Marantz -- I tend to think HK consumer level stuff kind of sucks. Their high end stuff is ok.

I will still stick with the three brands I mentioned for receivers -- and still think Onkyo is putting the best package together right now.

You've just proven my point and nullified yours: given the choices between Dolby Digital Plus and nothing... on Blu-Ray you get nothing

The Assassination of Jesse James got a "SKIP" from me because of BD-25 for a 3+hour movie and NO lossless audio. It would still have gotten a "SKIP" from me had it included Dolby Digital Plus

Lossless or DIE is my motto for HDM movies

P.S. Removing the below from your sig would surely make others here warm up to you and your views
(how can anyone that purchased HD DUD and continues to do so be taken seriously ).

Like I have said -- I am a movie fan. And not every movie I like is available on Blu.

Assassination of Jesse James was one of the best movies of 2007 (as was Michael Clayton). Given the posts you have made -- and your fanboi'ness -- it does not surprise me that you would skip such a thoughtful, deep, compelling and artistically significant film like Jesse James.

I am sure Ratatouille is probably more your style (and it has an uncompressed PCM) ... enjoy.
