I'd hope they look at things objectively and ask themselves "what do Star Wars fans want and what have they got?" That way we might get the release we're after. Both Disney and FOX have history of making great home video releases, with FOX giving fans what they want with the Alien Anthology (which had 2 cuts of each movie) set and Disney having a pretty good run of Classics with excellent AV.

I'm sure FOX and Disney are having discussions about releasing each episode individually with Special Editions of each movie. I hope they go all out on the SE's as well with all new effects (I'd love to see a new Trench Run and more dynamic battle between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in ANH). They should just go wild with the SE's and put them alongside restored versions of the theatricals and everyone will be happy. I honestly don't think anyone would have ever complained if they'd given the fans the option of having two cuts of each movie.

I have a slightly sneaky suspicion that we might see two releases of the original movies along with possible 3D versions. We're going to be bombarded with releases over the next few years!

I don't think we'll see them until Disney and FOX work something out. Attack of the Clones 3D doesn't have a theatrical release date. The Phantom Menace made $43+ million so I'm not sure if that was considered a huge success although it had a pretty good month before dropping off. It was always a tough sell though I think if they'd started with A New Hope 3D it would have done a lot better!

As they both like money, and fans have repeatedly stated they wanted the original "theatrical" trilogy, hopefully it will happen in the not too distant future. It really doesn't matter who owns the rights to what, if there is money to be made it would be foolish to ignore the market.
I really doubt they'd be a financial success. There's a core group online (on sites such as this who want the unaltered films) but the average person on the street really doesn't care. They'd have to go back and fix the original prints (which haven't been touched since the pre-Special Edition era) and restore them. I just think it would cost too much money for them to bother.

Seeing as the 3D theatrical releases have been postponed indefinitely I won't be holding my breath on 3D BR releases.

Slightly on topic. The Clone Wars is now finished as a TV series. There won't be a Season 6 on TV but there are more episodes coming. We just don't know how yet. Detours is postponed and there is a brand new animated series set in an as yet unexplored (in films and TV) era of the Star Wars Universe.

I hope we get individual releases prior to Episode VII.

I was also wondering; maybe Fox will have distribution rights for Star Wars Episode VII, VIII, and IX. Sort of like the way Paramount still distributes Marvel Studio films. Is it possible?
No. Paramount no longer have distribution rights to Marvel any longer. I think The Avengers was the last.

The original Trilogy needs to be restored and Disney know it, especially if they want them to compete in the 4K market, otherwise there won't be any incentive to re-release them. They might not be waving blank-cheques around but they'll certainly invest money into new editions.

I thought Iron Man 3 was the last. Something about some deal made previously that allowed them to extend their rights to Iorn Man 3.

Yep IM 3 will be the last one to have the Paramount branding although it is 100% distributed by Disney.

Don't hold your breath. There have been not only place holders, but actually able to preorder item which never get released.
The Beach, I ordered this like a year ago, think the most recent update is 31/12/13. Also Volcano, this seems to have just disappeared, although it sat in my amazon account for about 12 months.

I could be wrong but aside from TPM, have any other SW films had 3D cinema releases? Think that would happen long before home purchase

Exactly. The SW cash cow will not miss cinema releases for all these long before home purchase. Not sure how long ago at a cinema far far away TPM was playing but IMO we won't see 3D blus for the franchise for a couple of years minimum

It's going on a year or 2 now since TPM 3D came out.

I was looking forward to seeing them all in 3D, my guess now is that they will eventually re release them leading up to the 3D release of Episode VII,

BUT

Fox hold theatrical, nontheatrical and home video rights to the Star Wars films through May 2020, and will still own Episode IV for the rest of time. So maybe Fox will re release closer to VII to cash in or they will come to an agreement with Disney of some sorts.

Basically the 3D releases are a LONG way off. Anyone holding off waiting for these will probably see a new format released before these are on blu.

We could easily say 4k will be affordable and standard by the time Disney get hold of the first 5 films. So it wouldn't surprise me.

'Richard LeParmentier' A.K.A 'Admiral Motti' RIP.

Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago. A very pleasant man indeed and loved to talk about the football.

Why didn't Chewbacca get a medal at the end of A New Hope? I hadn't noticed this before, was this a simple case of wookie discrimination? Perhaps old George will fix this in the 4K edition in 2019?

1. Chewie was just a co-pilot so he can just suck it. Half the Falcon's problems are because his fur is EVERYWHERE!
Or:
2. Princess Leia couldn't reach around his neck without a ladder so to avoid embarrassment his cheque is in the mail...

Not a problem, Artoo is in fact a Henry hoover in disguise and has a special pet hair attachment.
