Hi Tom, I came across your site as I have a few questions I am hoping you will be able to answer regarding your NOTLD 1990 remake. I have the version that is single sided but is shown in widescreen format, and there is another version which has widescreen format on one side of the DVD and full screen format on the other. I was wondering why the full screen format was removed from NOTLD currently on the shelves? Yes I know a boring question. Second question is when are we going to see a Blu-Ray release of your NOTLD remake from 1990? Is this in the works? Will this be done with a new film made from the original negative or existing film(the one used for the DVD had some dirt specs which were noticeble on daytime scenes of the sky or/and trees)? I grew up on Romero's films. I had the original NOTLD on VHS, and when I was 12 years old my friend's older brother rented Dawn of the Dead, which was very cool, but of course gave me zombie nightmares for a few weeks after that. As a young adult I rented Day of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead (1990) both which have amazing storylines and great special effects(I know you had to remove some of the more gruesome effects for NOTLD but still great stuff). Years passed and I saw Land of the Dead in a theatre and bought Diary of the Dead on blu-ray. These movies are great and I hope to watch them all in blu-ray format. The zombies in your version of NOTLD were the creepiest zombies out of the series, especially the fisrt zombie and the autopsy zombie. Horrible, especially when they appear later in the film. Nice touch to leave the graveyard flower thing in the creature. I am hoping that you and Romero conclude the series with Dusk of the Dead. With any beginning, there should be an end. I personally think that that radioactive rock from Mars has run low on radiation by now, thus the zombies that exist still exist, but are unable to infect himan beings. People killed past this point would not rise as zombies, regardless of the reason for their demise, which would give mankind an opportunity to rebuild and make safe zones as they retakeover the Earth. Just an idea. I never got the idea that Canada would be a safer place than the States, Sure there is less people and our winters are pretty harsh but you'd have to go up to Nunavit(where the Eskimo's are) to have peace from the Zombies. Thanks for taking the time to read this. And thanks for helping create a true zombie genre and it is nice to see Blades in Land of the Dead(I thought I saw the same clown zombie that was used in Diary of the Dead in Day of the Dead. Of course his clothes were way more dirty by the time he appeared in Day of the Dead). Thanks, Charles --------------- 2009-04-01 Thanks for your kind comments Charles and I really don't know anything about what the owners do with my NOTLD. --------------- 2009-04-01 Hi Tom, I know you are a busy guy so if I'll make this quick. When your version of NOLTD does come out of blu-ray, I definitely will be picking it up. It is my favorite version of NOTLD as it is faithful the the dead franchise and what you guys did in the previous dead films. I heard the 30th anniversay editon of NOTLD was bad due to newly filmed footage, but hey I'll see if I can find that locally on DVD for some laughs. The thing that I like about your remake of NOTLD and the Romero/Savini films, is that the zombies have personaliites that are usually similar to how they were in life. Blades was a rough biker and kept that persona after his rebirth so to speak. The first zombie in your NOTLD remake(not the first guy who is living but kind of looks like he could be a zombie), seemed like he was an ******* in life and now is an ******* in death. He seemed to be a miderable older banker or lawyer whom everyone hated and probably died alone of a heart attack only to come back as an aggressive zombie. Instead of a hunger for money, he now has a hunger for flesh(2 the the 7 sins). Great make-up on that creature. The Autopsy zombie probably wasn't a bad guy in life, but of course he is still a zombie and needs to feed. Cooper would have been an ******* zombie had he been bitten and come back. In Dawn of the Dead, the Krishna Zombie seems very calm and smart even when he is trying to get to the lead female character, so calm in life and calm in undeath. Cool how Blades got shot and then fell into the water which would explain how he is intact in Land of the Dead. I always thought your make-up effects, which are cool as they look real and not computer generated or b-budget, and your directing skills would serve well in a Phantom of the Opera remake. Not a musical, but a true remake where the Phantom is disfigured, balding, ghoiulish teeth and so on. Chaney did some great work in that film both acting and of course make-up. I am sure in a modern age he could be made to look worse but still liivng and realistic. I guess I'll wait for the next Dead film to come out. I do think the idea of the Rock from Mars that caused the whole zombie epidemic would end due to the zombies not being able to infect people anymore and what remains of mankind would look beyond racism, etc and work together to secure the world back. The Mars rock caused the whole epidemic so removal, weakening, or destruction of the rock would or could be the shift the remaining humans need. Thanks again for reading my two emails. You do great work and I hope to see more of it. I think your time in Vietnam for better for for worse gave you unique insight into what death is and what death actually looks like. Maybe Vietnam was a crucial point in your life to lead to what you have done afterwards. Great typing with you. It really has been an honor expressing my thoughts to you. Thanks again, Charles Last edited by Atari Charles; 03-18-2013 at 12:01 AM. |

Hi Tom, I emailed you back in 2009 about Night of the Living Dead 1990 as well as other films you have worked on. You did reply and I do appreciate the response. Recently there has been some discussion on Twilight Time's release of Night of the Living Dead 1990 regarding the darkening or blue tinting of some scenes and I was wondering if you would be willing to either read the thread(or some of it as it is long) and post there or email me back regarding your opinion on the more recent blue tinting of parts of the film transfer? I do respect and appreciate your work on this very horrific film. But I do admit that I prefer the film as it was released non-darkened in the theatres and on the DVD I have now over the blu-ray darkened release. Here is the link to the forum thread below: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=198176 Thanks again for your time. Charles Last edited by Atari Charles; 03-18-2013 at 12:38 AM. |

I do think it would be interesting to hear Savini's current opinion on this and even anything else he may wish to comment on regarding his 1990 NOTLD. Besides maybe his opinion and him knowing various fans' opinions would have some influence on any future releases of this film. So will I hear from Savini or will he post here? I'd give it a 50% chance either way. |

LOL you sent him to page ONE of the thread, and people didn't even start making comments on the image until at least page 50. You might have done better to link him to a few choice posts.

This thread won't die, until a moderator close it, (which I doubt they never will.) If they had any intentions of closing it, they would've done it a long time ago.

![]() I got lucky and scored a copy of NOTD '90 off of e-bay for a very good price. It will be interesting to compare the Blu with my existing DVD. It sounds like a very flawed release but I am hopefuly that it provides an improvement over my DVD. |

I think Savini will know the subject of the dark tinting issue by the email I sent him. Besides I think it would do him good to read the entire thread.
I agree. It would be funny if Savini has some filters for any words to do with the TT release. This tinted TT release of NOTLD 1990 is an oddity so if gotten for a really really low price, it might be interesting to have. So congrats. How much did it cost you on ebay? Also let us know here what you think of the tinting and other aspects of this release compaired to your DVD copy. It is not like I'll make it to any of the fan conventions me being way up here in the Frozen North. So email really is my only option to contact Savini. He did respond to my previous email, but this TT release might be something he may just want to avoid. I am not against the film makers' intent, but there really should be a limit to when the intent is actually done on the existing film. 23 years later is way to late to alter the existing film. Think of it this way. Imagine if the director if the Wizard if Oz really wanted to add a giant robot scene of a giant robot smashing OZ Godzilla style right after Dorothy returns back to Earth. But he is unable to add this scene because lack of money, lack of special effects, lack of technology, and lack of time. So 20 or 30 years pass. The director decides to re-release The Wizard of OZ using a 1950's robot smashing cardboard buildings. Of course, this would be crappy, crappy like Greedo shooting first or the endless changes to the original Star Wars trilogy. So just because the director really wanted to do something in the movie and couldn't, doesn't mean he should go back later and alter the movie. People want the original movie in as best quality and as it was released. People like extended cuts of already existing footage, but I don't think people want revisionist movie making years after the movie was made. Besides you all remember the best example of revisionist film making? Night of The Living Dead 30th Anniversary. Last edited by Atari Charles; 03-18-2013 at 03:15 PM. |

Seriously I'd like to see Savini respond to my email. I truly hope we can see a proper Criterion quality new transfer and release. Sadly even if Sony or another company does release this on blu-ray, they will probably use this pos smurfy transfer. This will float around as much as that pos cropped 1968 transfer. What a waste. So if Savini doesn't respond(why wouldn't he as he supposidly loves the Twilight Time release), then should I email him my story "A Smurf Tale"? ![]() I am hoping he will give a more detailed response, whatever his answer may be. But should this be his response, I would respect him more for actually answering my email regarding this topic, but I would still prefer my dvd copy and wait for a non-revisionist release on blu-ray. Besides if he was actually going to have a hand in releasing this film in high def, wouldn't he have added back the gore that was cut from this film due to censorship. The truth is Savini had zero to do with this Twilight Time release and the smurfy transfer used. Like Savini wrote me back in 2009 2009-04-01 Thanks for your kind comments Charles and I really don't know anything about what the owners do with my NOTLD. Well...
It came in today. Now I have a little TT collection... ![]() DVD plus TT Blu plus double case = my own special edition. ![]() ![]() ![]() Interesting all of thie smurf talk. The border around the circumference of the disc seems blue... ![]() Going to check out the movie this weekend and see how it looks. Just the same it sounds like it is a bit of a flawed transfer. Like my Forgotten Films version of the original this is a "placeholder" until a better version comes along. Better than the DVDs but not a "definitive" version by any means. ![]() |
