Default when I plug in an external hard drive, why does PS3 want to read EVERY file first?

I have roughly 500 to 600 video clips on my 160GB external hard drive.
When I plugged it into the PS3's USB, it is recognized immediately.
However, if I move to the video folder, the PS3 tries to read every
video file.... which takes a little time... it only seems to be reading
the file names/sizes... The video files range in size from 50MB to
3GB...(Divx, MP4, and M2T)

The annoying thing is that everytime I turn on the PS3, the whole
process repeats by itself...

Is there a way around this?

Thanks!

Does Triangle -> Display all

Help or make things worse,
display all should take you to
only the root folder.

That's actually what I always do... I use "Display All" to go to the folder
where the videos are located.... perhaps the problem is that I have all
536 videos in one folder.... I'll try to sort the videos and divide them up
in perhaps 10 folders and see if that helps...

Thanks

Yeah having them all in the one folder would cause that issue.

yeah, the PS3 does not have an indexing service. The same thing happens in Windows for folders that are not indexed. It can also slow things down because all of the data is loaded into ram

Yah and its my biggest complaint about the PS3. It makes putting a lot of music or movies on your PS3 pointless because it slows it down so much. I have complained to Sony, so Im holding out hope that they fix it.

Default why does PS3 have to scan all files when I plug in external hard drive?

why does PS3 have to scan all files when I plug in external hard drive?

not really an issue if the hard drive is tiny... like 120GB or less... but
I use a 750GB external hard drive...

any work-around for this?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert at this but it's probably checking to see if it's good enough for the PS3. Excuse my insult because I'm kinda drunk right now. Excuse me for asking but Why do you need a 750GB hard drive for the PS3? I'm happy with my 60 GB and don't need anymore.

I have no idea why it does this, but it drives me crazy. It practically makes it pointless to have decent size hard drive with the PS3.

It's to do with not having an indexing service I think. The best thing to reduce the scan time is to use a good folder system and keep it organized. That way it only reads the initial folders, and not just a huge lump of files.

I finally manged to organize all of the files on the ext hard drive... now I've
got 10 initial folders, then 26 sub-folders(each with another 10 folders)

Now my PS3 doesn't try to read all the files when I access the ext hard
drive... (well... it will only read the files within that one folder) so every-
thing goes a lot faster...
