It's a term used by Disney and a few other distributors. Disney US call them O-Sleeves.

We just say "O-Shit where the hell are our slip covers!"

THE BIRDS looks really fine on Blu-ray. MARNIE, on the other hand, is atrocious, and should NOT be purchased, at any price. Universal should be ashamed to release it. I've never seen a worse transfer of a film, on any media (video tape, laserdisc, dvd, Blu-ray).

Reference The Birds, really ? I take it you've got the Hitchcock box-set - I really like this film but have heard the effects don't stand up too well to scrutiny in HD ie the schoolchildren sequence and aerial shots of the birds. Still looking forward to seeing it though

Not much they could do about the composite shots, and frankly I wouldn't want them to do anything to them. The revisionist nature of say Disney or George Lucas, touching up their films decades later needs to stop. More than anything else, it's a slap in the face to the animators and/or special effects artists of the time, who worked exceptionally hard on them.

As the owner of the classic Hammer horror, 'The Devil Rides out' on blu-ray, I'm aware of the controversy reference re-done effects. I havn't seen the new effects wrt the original Star Wars trilogy (George Lucas) but no doubt will do when I purchase 'The empire strikes back' when it is eventually released as a stand-alone. I also own 'Star Trek:The Original Series' on blu-ray and that would appear to be the way forward with any new effects

My previous comments ref the effects on 'The Birds' were an observation and at no time was re-touching of effects mentioned or connected to by myself. I have to say am really looking forward to seeing this classic Hitchcock film in HD along with 'Rear Window', bring it on !!

Thoughts on the cover? I find it a bit odd;

Remove the face and I'd be a lot happier with it.

No one can say for definite until it arrives, but it looks like it probably will be. The bonus features listed for the Masterpiece Boxset on Amazon are as follows, but there are no specifications for this release yet:

Deleted Scene, Original Ending, The Birds: Hitchcock’s Monster Movie – New! (Blu-ray Exclusive), All About The Birds, Storyboards, Tippi Hedren’s Screen Test, Hitchcock-Truffaut Interview Excerpts, The Birds Is Coming (Universal International Newsreel), Suspense Story: National Press Club Hears Hitchcock (Universal International Newsreel), Production Photographs, 100 Years of Universal: Restoring the Classics, 100 Years of Universal: The Lot, Theatrical Trailer, BD Live, Pocket Blu (Blu-ray Exclusive).

It's likely that this version will have the same features and the same remastered transfer.

That's pretty subtle.

Are they all crows on the cover? They'd be a murder of crows then, which would be neat but I think I spotted a penguin... Either way I'm getting the flock out of there.

Well I'm reminded of a lapel badge that was popular some years ago which went something like, "I am somewhat of a bullshitter myself but sometimes I like to listen to a professional so please carry on"

I don't mind the face on the cover but would prefer it without; I do like the gold though which on a slip will be similar to the Sony collectors editions, quite classy. Must say am very much looking forward to this release !

Having worked for the BTO as a kid on censuses that looks like your standard rook in trees and flights of feral pigeons in the sky.

Quote:
March 28, 1963
On this day in Horror History, Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The Birds debuted in New York City. Based on the story by Daphne Du Maurier, The Birds was the famed director’s return to film after Psycho and a 3 year hiatus while working on ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’. In the presence of many films playing upon the stylized approach and success of Psycho, the legendary director turned the tables on the industry and made the seemingly mundane quite terrifying. With brilliant film-making, the beauty of Tippi Hedre, and the peculiar joy that Hitchcock proved with such antics as speakers bellowing the sounds of birds outside the theatre, the cinematic masterpiece would become one of the most beloved of his career.

“I have never known birds of different species to flock together. The very concept is unimaginable. Why, if that happened, we wouldn't stand a chance! How could we possibly hope to fight them?” –Mrs. Bundy

Got mine today. Comes with a gold slipcover and an art card inside. Really like the spine too.
