On a serious note, maybe studios are pushing digital because it ain't doing well sell through wise? Maybe, just maybe, they are trying to flog a dead horse? Just my opinion. Oh S***! I have posted again. Oh well.

Not at all Apple obsessed, I was very weary about Apple TV, a friend of mind sold me on the idea. I decided to use a gift card on the device and I was stunned at how good the 1080p Apple TV third generation device was. I am assuming most of the people on here including have no experience with the latest Apple TV, but let me tell you, it is the real deal, no doubt about it. I was also shocked at how good Netflix was on the Apple TV, really shocked at how good it was. Now, compared to my laptop or PS3, the picture is not as good as that on the Apple TV 3rd gen model. Remember and keep in mind that the older Apple TV models were not 1080p, they were 720p. Right now, streaming is still very player dependent.

Apple TV is the real deal, I think I have done 6 or 7 rentals now and least a half dozen Netflix movies, I fully recommend the 3rd gen Apple Tv. Can't say I rent blu rays anymore, I doubt I even want to.

I have an aTV 3rd gen too. While I love the small consumption of wattage and fast boot up , the way apple streams is crappy. For example, in my 4MB internet connection (can't afford higher speed) I have to wait around 12mins for 720 and around 20mins for 1080. SD plays instantly. But, on the same connection I play HDX files from Vudu from my PS3 (which I believe doesn't even have N, but G card) and I'm watching better quality and no loading times on the highest video setting! I'm ready for someone to bring a jailbreak to the aTV 3rd gen so I can use it more and better.

I still find blu-rays to be better than digitals, they cost too much for a non-physical copy that they can turn off whenever they please and as long as they want. Until there is a guarantee that we won't lose our digital copies before someone removes them or goes bankrupt then streaming movies/shows won't advanced like games on PCs' have w/ Steam. The reality is that I don't see the studios getting together to decide in favor of doing things similar to Steam relating our digital property because they like $$$ too much.

Hey, you make some good points, however I should mention that 1080p from iTunes needs a faster internet connection than what you currently have, mine is about 10mps and I have no problems, it starts up right away when I click rent. Life of Pi looked stunning.

You make some interesting points about downloading movies to buy, I am not sold on buying movies in digital just yet. I would not worry about iTunes/Apple going bankrupt of anything, but you never know.

I find iTunes or digital streaming the perfect replacement for renting discs, that is what I like about it. My buying days are mostly gone, I only buy a few blurays and or dvds these days with the occasional laserdisc. I rent more than I ever did....but if the blu ray was the same cost as the iTunes rental, I would go drive and buy....but I can't say I even had the option with Life of Pi...

That is my main issue w/ iTunes though, Vudu streams me a 1080 version (HDX) that I think looks even better than the iTunes 1080 version instantly in my weak sauce 4MB internet, I can rewind, fast forward, skip chapters and I can keep watching the movie in hi-def instantly. I don't understand why apple doesn't improve their streaming services in relation to speed. Vudu from what I have read works like a beehive, a modified P2P isntead of everyone trying to get the movie from one place, which makes things stream faster. I love my apple products, but my aTV3 has been a let down thanks to that. If there was a jailbreak then I would be using it 24/7.

Yeah, for renting digital is perfectly fine, iTunes does a great job of making you rent easily; I do wish rental was cheaper though. If they could do $3 rentals they would kill redbox even though redbox charges $1.5, but you have to take your time to get to the car and go to a box, lose time and rent. I have Life of Pi digital too and looks and sounds great in HDX!

EDIT: Yeah, iTunes won't go bankrupt, but they have removed stuff from the cloud before thanks to studio licenses. Is not apple that I worry, is the studios greed.

Never used vudu, I don't think I ever will. As for Apple TV, you need a minimum of 4.4 mps I think. For 1080p (near instant) you would need 8mps. Minimum HDX is 4.5 mps.
Vudu is streaming while iTunes is downloading that is why you have to wait as your Internet speed is just not fast enough. P

I agree, renting digital is perfectly fine, IMO this is where the market is headed, consumer will turn into renters vs buyers.

Buyers and renters (there's no vs as you can do a nice venn diagram of the two groups)..so just like it's been for the last 30 years or so. Cool.

(VHS & beta started life as sell through, I'm sure you're aware)

Yes we know, you have told us 1,000 times now.
I'm here to say it is a very poor solution with artefacts all over the place even on 1080p (in my opinion)
For a bedroom itis fine. For a home cinema , it needs to come back when it has grown up (in my opinion)

Streaming is the same as downloading , just downloads to a temp folder that gets erased. The difference between Vudu and iTunes is the way they are able to sent you the contents and the compression technique is better. I love iTunes and wish I could do all my watching in my aTV3 instead of my PS3, but their streaming is not the best. I shouldn't need to wait to afford better speeds to enjoy "1080 iTunes" stuff w/out waiting when their competitor is giving me a better image quality of my movies instantly. I do love that all my iTunes movies have CC, some have extra subtitles and languages, while Vudu does not even have CC for most titles. Perfect example "Life of Pi"

If that is to become the norm, they would have to charge $1 for HD movies for people to not care owning content though.

36 years after rentals started it'll finally start to kill buying. You heard it here first folks.

I really want Digital Cinema Package (DCP) for home use. You could distribute it on physical media or download it without any quality difference.

Good luck on the studios allowing that to happen.

They are pushing the model because it is getting one step closer to their ultimate goal... pay every time you want to watch a title, aka pay to play.

That's why the studios can take a hike if this model takes over. I'll find other things to spend my cash on.

Which means if this model becomes the primary delivery method it won't be long until some group hacks it so you will be able to keep a copy of it.

Go ahead studios keep treating your customers like theives and they will eventually be forced to behave as such.

Studios had the long rental window before street date pricing for VHS. A similar concept will return, renting online will be the option before the street date blu ray release is offered. In the long run, consumer will rent more movies than they will buy them.

I can see them doing that, but instead of making the buying time longer they could start doing online delivery few months after the movie theaters. They have started early digital release like that w/ the preorders of some movies now.

Quick question did you buy Life of Pi in iTunes or did you use your DC?

I think three months after the cinema is ideal for movies that can pick up traction from a major event like a festival, golden globes or an Oscar win. Right now we are seeing some movies that came out in November and December start to become available on iTunes. The Hobbit is around 90 days since release. I think iTunes needs to start an early release rental window before you can buy, I would totally support that, my buying days are pretty much history as renting is a solid alternative for me..so I would like to see this become an option.

As for Life of Pi, I rented it on iTunes.
