Howard Shore has to rescore sections and they bring in the orchestra. New CGI has to be produced. Oftentimes even more material is shot in pickups. Let alone the picture editing, sound editing, color grading. Even if Peter Jackson says that the first EE of The Hobbit is edited, he's meaning the unfinished cut. The timing is set. All the other work still has to be done, while they are working on films two and three. They don't just pass the work on to another group of people. Oftentimes, it is the same people who do the visual effects for the theatrical version. It's a ton of work to add an extra 50 minutes of material. That's not even taking into account the bonus material, which will probably be similar to the 4-hour documentaries that were on LOTR. And, yes, there is marketing involved. Why would you release two versions at the same time? The sales would work against each other. Yes, November is a great date for holiday sales and to drum up increased interest in the next film, but the EE would be released at the same time anyway, despite the next film. |

The only thing I have read, was that an extended edition is going to be released. The only information I have found to even say anything regarding 3D is this post: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/column...ts/020513_1300 Which I believe to be inaccurate as I have not seen anything official to confirm the Extended 3D. I think the post was making assumptions, like everyone else. Based on past history (Green Lantern, Harold and Kumar, Avatar, etc ...) my strong guess is that it won't have a 3D version. And if it did, it won't be extended. Which is why I made the decision to purchase the 3D version today. Plus, I get to watch more middle earth goodness sooner as a worst case scenerio. ![]() Last edited by tilallr1; 03-19-2013 at 06:04 PM. |

it would be the first of its kind but jackson usually takes care of his fans. although avatar was shot in almost all 3D just like the hobbit, they still havent made a 3D extended. panasonic did hold the rights to 3D version for 2-3 years before it even came out for retail. this also has an effect on the market influence. |

But I am not going to argue. I personally don't see it happening, and DO NOT want to pay $40 for the 3D edition later. So I choose to purchase and enjoy it now. If the Extended comes out, I will get that too. All good. Last edited by tilallr1; 03-19-2013 at 06:22 PM. |

Jacksn said in an interview after AUJ was released that there was around 25 minutes being put back into AUJ so yeah there is still footage left on the cutting room floor. Itd Jackson the man shoots more footage than any other director I know of.

As for a 3D extended edition being the first of its kind...didn't Cameron release his extended cut of Avatar in 3D? Not a fan of Avatar, so I wouldn't know. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 03-19-2013 at 08:30 PM. |

Secondly I truly hope Howard Shore does do new music and they infact take the time to rescore parts of the film. Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised to see tracked music used for parts if the theatrical cut is anything to go by. And the deluxe version of 'The White Council' on the soundtrack suggests that some of the extended material has already been scored. I have already said that this project will require plenty of work and couldn't be released this March. And I agree, I don't see why a major studio would release both together when there's money to be made. I'm just saying that I don't think the Extended Edition necessarily requires 9 months of work. The fact that Jackson had it cut pretty much by Christmas suggests to me that he's quite eager to get it done and focus all his efforts on the remaining two films. |

Maybe... I don't know for sure. What I do know is that it made no sense in the context of the scene and characters. Even if he wanted to retcon the witch king theme and have it evolve over these three films and become the witchking theme that we know from LOTR it makes no sense, because their is absolutely no connection between azog and the witchking beyond both being raging dick holes. It doesn't make sense for the theme to evolve that way. Imo it was nonsensical. I'm not a composer tho so wtf do I know lol.
