I watched No Country for Old Men last night and wasn't that impressed with the quality. The PQ and AQ were good, but I wasn't as impressed as I was with POTC 2. By no means am I saying POTC 2 has better quality than NCFOM, I just wasn't as floored and impressed as I was when I saw POTC 2.

When I watched POTC 2 the quality seemed above and beyond what I was used to with a few blus and a lot of upconverted DVDs/cable. Now, No Country just seems a tad above the standard, which now is blu-ray instead of upconversion/cable. I watch the movie for the movie and don't even care about the detail anymore. The only time I care about detail anymore is when its not blu-ray and then it is just this Anybody else feeling this way.

The difference was before, I would go over to a friends house with a SDTV, say to myself this is the standard, and I have above the standard (HDTV). His doesn't look bad, mine just looks really good. Now I see myself thinking that HDTV is the standard and my friends are all below the standard. Mine looks average, his (SDTV) looks bad.

This was all triggered by a Spring Break without HD. I litterly would rub my eyes every minute if I was playing a game or watching SDTV because I kept thinking my contacts were fogging up. I just couldn't get over how bad everything looked. I came home watched 2 digital flicks at the theaters (Juno and Horton) and just thought, thank god im back to what I'm used to (a standard which is now HD).
I din't know real what I should say about this.

Well if u drink champain in the morning and your girlfriend is Salma Haijek I gues u get feedup with that also!....

Anyway yes we get feed up with everything but too much of the good stuff!. So try to see some bad encoded divx films then u know what I mean.

Although I can certainly empathize with you guys, ever since I purchased my blu-ray player, from time to time, I'll watch a standard dvd on it and wonder how the movie would look in high def, however, my love for movies is so much more greater than not being able to watch the film at all. I keep reminding myself that eventually, the film will be released in high def, and the anticipation for it, makes me love movies that much more. I do wish there was something that I could contribute, so that my blu-ray brothers and sisters could feel much better about the incredible investment we've made, because all of us here are definitely in part, responsible, that our format of choice won, not only the uphill battle we faced, but the war as well...

Yeah,

I hear ya... I think some of mine deflated to like 978p or so.

My laserdiscs have gotten better though.. I think LD just overtook DVD and who knows how good it's going to get in the future.

Blu-Ray not as impressive compared to what?

Since not all BDs are created equal, I watch BDs with the understanding that not all movies will look like Ratatouille or POTC. That said, I am continue to be impressed with how much better BD is over SD-DVD. And when I run into a BD transfer that was done properly, even more impressed.

So, perhaps some folks have gotten jaded and accept BD as the "norm" now and is no longer impressive, but I still have a lot of SD-DVDs that go unwatched because I am waiting for the day when I can watch them in BD.

Just my $0.02.

I remember when I was in high school many, many years ago... I was still
a virgin by the time I was a junior.... By the end of my junior year,
I was no longer a virgin! Needless to say, I was getting it whenever
possible. Then my girlfriend and I broke up in the summer.... by the time
senior year started, I got another girlfriend(co-captain of the cheerleading
squad at school)... but then the sex didn't seem as amazing as the first
time....

In college, it became almost as routine as the breakfast cereal to me...

I guess it's the same thing with HDTV and Blu-ray... now I just expect
everything to be high-def.... perhaps if I'm forced to watch standard
def TV for a couple of months, I'll come to apperciate how great HDTV
really is again...

I remember seeing a broadcast loop of snakes and flowers in high def 1080i via component video, scan lines and all, for the first time on a 2+foot thick boxey 9" CRT RPTV - a one-of-a-kind $9,999 'demo only' in CC back in 1998. Wow, look how big the screen is. It was like going to the movies! I was also wowed in 2003 after seeing a 1,200:1 contrast 18" thick $3,999 720P DLP with DVI for the first time. It looked just like a computer screen, only bigger and wider. And it was so sharp. Made my skin tingle. Now with a $2,500 46" 4" thin 25,000:1 contrast Samsung 1080P playing a blu version of ID4 via HDMI in the bedroom, I can see how it really comes up short of reproducing a good 10mega pixle still camera image, a good 35mm slide, or even a photo from a book. Bummer, I'm not getting that warm feeling like I got before. Ah! But captian OLED with his flexable 3mm 1,000,000:1 contrast 120Hz TV will soon come to the rescue to save us from our HDTV blues!

In the meantime, the focus will return back to content, where it should be.

Ya, the Wow factor is starting to subside with me too. When I first got my PS3 (for movies – not a gamer) in Oct 07 you could have had a blu of my neighbour taking out the trash & scratching his butt & I could sit & watch it in total amazement. It took me until January for the movie to be the sole reason for watching. Two things do remind me that I’m actually privileged though: 1. Trying to watch an old favourite on SD & 2. Those bloody cell phones. I mean I’ve been into hi rez music (dvd-audio & sacds) for years but dammit if one of those things goes off in the movies & they don’t pick it up right away – I’m going for mine!

you guys are crazy

lol. it's true that you take it for granted because that's how it's supposed to look like. All it takes is to see the same movie in SD and it makes me go wow. Everytime i watch a SD movie i can see the difference that blu ray would bring. I just love it , but than again , i've only started watching blu ray for a few weeks now. I love it

and NCFOM PQ was amazing i thought, outdoor scenes were breathtaking

It's like living here in Montana: being able to step outside and see breathtaking vistas can begin to seem 'normal' sometimes. Then after a visit to suburbia I realize how lucky I am. But then again, each new sunrise can re-awaken the wonder.. just like a well made Blu-ray title.

Default Wow factor going away?

Does it seem like the wow factor is decreasing for any of you? I mean the quality is top notch but are you "getting use to it"? I still enjoy movies in the highest quality but I think my eyes have adjusted and the hi def experience is just becoming "normal". I think in a couple years... there won't be many "awesome PQ" threads going on much anymore. What do you all think?

You know what they say about too much of a good thing.....

I know what you mean. I really cant go back and watch a normal dvd now. Unless i'm at a friends and i enjoy it because i am not rude. But at my home i always watch blu ray now. Even my fiance will only watch blu now and when we watch she is even saying things like...wow that water looks so real...or the grass looks amazing...And on some blu rays she will say...the background is fuzzy or this one doesnt look as good as the other..

I think i have created a montster because today she was putting in different blu rays and skipping around just to look at the quality lol.
I am not this bad i never have said anything about the looks This all is coming from her.

But we did talk about how we cant go back and watch normal dvds for some reason or play video games without being in HD...
But this being the norm is kinda cool maybe prices will drop
If you can afford it i guess its cool tho for now.
We just bought a nice 52 inch samsung 1080p lcd...blu ray player
and 10 blu rays so far...ready to pawn off the dvd collection for more blus
Its a fun thing to do collecting...Just make sure you have food...bills are paid...kid has clothes and diapers..toys..lol...You get it already

The wow-factor is clearly in check. The only issue I am unimpressed with is the the fact that certain parties/studios aren't moving forward quicker.

Easiest way to cure it is to watch a dvd, or better yet some VHS

Luckily for me, I'm stuck watching BD's on a 37" 1366 x 768 screen accepting input at 1080i.

Make no mistake, it still looks stunning, but in a couple of years when I'm watching it on the latest projector running 1080P natively on a 110" screen, I think I'll get the wow factor crammed up my cram hole once more... and all on discs that were just sitting there for two or three years .

And to think, with DVD's the audio video setup actually exceeded the source material .
