They never released the extended edition of Avatar theatrically or in 3D, but they did release the special edition theatrically in 3D. So there's three different cuts of Avatar and the longest cut has never been screened theatrically or in 3D.

The Hobbit: AUJ will ultimately have two different cuts. No idea if that means it's more likely to see the extended edition in 3D, but considering the length shouldn't be drastically longer than the theatrical cut, it seems possible.

Even so, there's no reason why they couldn't release any cut they want on Blu-ray 3D. I'd say some people's guess of Fox releasing the ultimate 3D edition before Avatar 2 comes out in theaters is a good one.

It's killing me not to be able to pick The Hobbit up, while waiting another 8-9 months for the EE, but I refuse to double dip on these. That said, I'm definitely in the camp that feels Jackson is WAY overdoing things by splitting this (far simpler) book into three movies, and even moreso into 3 EEs. While I absolutely love his Middle Earth, this just reeks of a total cash grab. I'm sure I'll change my mind in a couple years when I spend a Saturday watching all 3 Hobbit EEs, but for now, I'm still pretty annoyed with the whole thing. I would've tolerated it when it was just being split in half, but not thirds.

Harry Potter 7 set a nasty precedent with all this movie splitting (HP, Twilight, Hobbit, HG, etc.)

You know you could buy the digibook version now, then just sell that for like $20 once the EE comes out. I'm sure the digibook will be OOP by then

I feel that if translating a Book into a Movie it should be MANDATORY to make 2 Movies out of it!
BUT!!!
They should NOT be released A WHOLE YEAR APART!
6 months between parts at the most!
Unless it something like Where the Wild things are... That was only like 12 pages... One Movie is fine...

Back to the Future II and III was one script split into two, ditto Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. Harry Potter didn't set the precedent. No, they weren't based on books, but shooting two films at the same time isn't neccesarily new.

What's 30 days if you're not wanting to double dip?

Or better yet just pay a couple of $$$ for the UV code and stream it till the EE is released.

Post-Production for movies of this scale take a hell of a lot longer than 6 months.

They're not cheap like Twilight here.

It depends on the shots...it's not like we're getting 25-30 minutes of CGI. So far, I've only heard of a scene of Bilbo buying fish and walking around Hobbiton, a scene of young Bilbo meeting Gandalf, and some more nonsense with the Goblin King. I'm sure there will be more, but the time it takes to complete the post depends on the shots, not some general timeframe.

I think that AUJ will be better received once the entire trilogy is out and we can all see it as one story. I think certain movies based on books should be split into two. The last Twilight definitely did not need to be; that was a total cash grab. Harry Potter 7 really needed it. Books 4-6 probably could have been too if they wanted to do a completely faithful adaptation, or at least have a LOTR-level extended edition. I haven't read the appendices for LOTR, but I've heard there's a ton of material from the Hobbit era, so I'm excited to see how PJ expands on this little book.

Was talking about the wait between sequels.

I think you're right regarding a re-appraisal of Part 1...seeing it for the second time, it's very obvious how many story threads are being set up for later pay off (see Galadriel holding hands with Gandalf and telling him she will come to him when he needs her, etc.). The film is loaded with those moments...It's almost unfair, but that's the way it is.

They could just wait an extra 6 months to begin with before releasing the first film, then have them come oun on a schedule.

I think you're right about that. When friends/family ask what I thought of the movie, I have to explain to them that I can't really judge it until I've seen all 3 movies. On it's own, I feel like a bit should be cut out, but those parts should seem more important once the other 2 films come out.

Perhaps, but there's still no reason the overly long tree sequence at the end of the film can't be trimmed, and the fighting mountains (as well as the Goblin King's "That'll do it" line) removed for the EE. While I'm not expecting it, I'd love it if they fixed those sequences...Whatever the case, I'll certainly be buying the EE when it comes out.

I am still debating whether to just wait for the extended version or just buy the theatrical version this week. If anything I feel like the theatrical could be trimmed down but wonder if the Extended with offer something of good value with new/different scenes. Thoughts? If it just adds scenes that really don't add anything to the movie, I have to pass.
