I suspect many of us will be having the same mass debate for the next eight months or so. But we're not really going to know the nature of the EE, and whether it's preferable over the standard release, until someone actually has a copy in their hot little disc drive.

Luckly for me one of my co-workers let me borrow his Walmart version which I watched the other night. Now being the 4th time that I have watched this, I am pretty much sated for quite a while. So I will wait and see what the EE has to offer, and then choose between that one or the Theatrical during the Black Friday sale. .

The fighting mountains were ridiculous, and served no purpose whatsoever, and if I could only pick one thing to cut out of the movie, that would be it.
The tree sequence just dragged on and on. Quote:

After watching the Production Video Blogs from the theatrical release, I am looking forward to seeing The Appendices.

So I bought the digibook of The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey from Walmart today and read online that sometime this year a extended version with 20 to 25 mins added to the movie will be coming out. And I wanna know for anyone that owns the extended lord of the rings movies is it worth waiting for the extended editions of the hobbit movies? If it is I might just wait to get all the hobbit movie extended editions. In the mean time at least I can see the hobbit as I didn't get to see it in theaters.

I hope that there will be a little more Radagast & his animals in the extended edition of The Hobbit. Think they shot more of the spiders & what they actually did to Radagast's animals than what made it into the theatrical version? I'm mostly content with the theatrical version as is & just waiting for the next 2 installments to see Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel.

Obviously fans that like the EE's are going to say yes, and those that don't think the EE's add much will say no. Best bet, for you, is to be your own judge. Afterall you've got several months to decide. ![]() |

I was underwhelmed with The Hobbit when I saw it in the theater. I admit my expectations were very high. As others have written, one can complain about the erratic pacing, the lack of character development, parts of the story seem irrelevant, the movie is bloated, etc.
But having said that, it's Middle Earth, and I love being there. Peter Jackson is taking fans on a tour of ME over three movies that clearly go beyond The Hobbit. I am a big fan of LOTR and I have the extended version. I do not have the theater version, and have no desire to have it. The way I see it, I can find fault with The Hobbit, but if you want to return to Middle Earth and enjoy the time you are there, then the longer the better. It reminds me of Woody Allen's joke: Two women walk out of a restaurant, One woman says, "The food was not very good", and the other woman says, "Yes, and the portions were small!" Okay, The Hobbit is not perfect. But I want the largest portion I can get. I'll eagerly wait for the EE. Last edited by Chrysagon; 03-24-2013 at 03:21 PM. |

I think it really depends on what you think of The Hobbit in its current form. Did you like the movie and feel it did not drag, or did you think it was a bit bloated already? If it feels a bit bloated to you already, chances are MORE will not make things better and will simply make an already padded film even more bloated. An Unexpected Journey, on the other hand, had a pacing that was all over the place. The first 5-10 minutes were amazing. After seeing that opening, I thought I would be in for a real treat. But the introduction to the dwarves and the nature of the journey went on too long. I know the Hobbit is sillier and light-hearted, but the dwarves tossing around plates and singing, most of the dinner antics in general, weren't really necessary. By the time the adventure finally started, I had already started to lose interest. Then they made it to Rivendell where things picked up. Then they went to the caves and it really slowed down again. Then Gollum livened things up. The movie constantly shifted from high highs to low lows. When you make a movie that spans past two hours, pacing is paramount. You have to make sure people don't realize they've been sitting there for over two hours. The Lord of the Rings films did a great job of this, especially Return of the King. In mine and many others' opinions, An Unexpected Journey failed in this regard. |

I don't see how The Hobbit is any slower than FOTR EE. I am glad Jackson spent a great deal of time with Bilbo and the dwarves in his house. I always thought the beginning of the theatrical cut of FOTR was weak and was glad that PJ put all of that stuff back in for EE.
