Yeah, that stupid Best Picture Oscar was a really obscure award it got.

Wow, wonderful and unexpected news about The Disappearance, I have the terrible looking full frame UK DVD, and will be very happy to upgrade!

Ditto, I love TT but if I might be able to get it a bit cheaper then I wouldn't oppose getting it via the import route.

Lightbulb Just FYI...

...the latest round of TT announcements by Composer/(presumed) IST:
  • Sleepless in Seattle - Marc Shaiman
  • Love is a Many-Splendored Thing - Alfred Newman
  • Body Double - Pino Donaggio
  • Sexy Beast - Roque Baños
  • The Disappearance - Robert Farnon
Probably needless to say by now, but I'm in for all of these, and am especially looking forward to The Disappearance. I vaguely recall renting a panned and scanned Vestron VHS back in the 80s...but that was so long ago, and so crudely presented, it might as well be a new film.

Also FWIW, Sexy Beast (from 2000) is now the most recent title in the TT collection; Swamp Water (1941) still the oldest.

You'll probably have to go back in time about a year and a half ago to when it was still valid. I believe it expired just before Fright Night was released and was supposed to be valid if you made a purchase via amazon (or something, I forget).

Good luck!! If you do go back in time please pick me up a few dozen Fright Nights!

Sleepless in Seattle would be a surprise. That should be a title that's eventually found for $10 at any store, not a limited edition!

You would think that but apparently Sony like to give people the shaft. Worst part is I'll probably end up getting it thus feeding the beast.

Hoping there is a import alternative.

A) A lot of people don't know about it. When it's specifically only available from one retailer, that doesn't make it very obvious to the public.

B) At $35, perhaps not.

Yeah, it's a bit ironic. Twilight Time has said that they don't cater to Walmart shoppers (ie casual movie fans/buyers). Yet, they keep picking titles that would appeal specifically to Walmart shoppers (Steel Magnolias, Sleepless in Seattle, As Good as It Gets).

Yeah, I ignore those awards especially when it didn't win . Seriously, I had no idea. I thought it was an average movie. It didn't impress me and I didn't find it romantic (as classified). I'd really not care if I saw it again based on what I remember. I guess it's all in perception .

I stand corrected, so let me get this right now:

Yeah, those Best Actor and Best Actress Oscars it got that year were really obscure.

Has anyone read the incredibly snarky review of Song of Bernadette over at DVD Talk?

Quote:
While I actually have little problem with religious-themed motion pictures, I have never had one so insistently close the door on non-believers as The Song of Bernadette. I must say, there was something terribly off-putting about entering into a 2-1/2 hour movie that begins with a title card telling me right up front that I won't get it and I never will. So much for spreading the gospel.
Quote:
It doesn't help that Jennifer Jones is equally lacking in the talent department. Jones has little natural charisma on screen, and her involvement here (she gets an "introducing" credit despite some otherwise forgotten earlier cinematic efforts) is largely due to her personal involvement with producer David O. Selznick.
She was lacking so much talent that she won an Academy Award for her role in this film. She was also nominated for an Oscar four more times in her career.

The essay that comes with the blu-ray explains the reason for this too.

That review is definitely a bit snarky. If someone has a problem with religious-themed films prior to viewing this film, then they shouldn't be the one to review it. If someone doesn't like sports, then they shouldn't review an ESPN blu-ray. Same with documentaries and so on. Personally, I thought the film was fantastic. I had never seen it before and it blew me away.

I can sort of understand what he's trying to say here, but if you've ever ready any of the vitriol many atheists spew on the internet, then the title card rings a bit true.

It appears as if Germany isn't the only country where these are being released by Sony, and won't be limited. According to a local Australian online retailer, Ezydvd.com.au, Philadelphia and Sleepless in Seattle are being released here in Australia on the 6th of June. They are listed with a price of au$14.97 each, which means JBHiFi.com.au will likely have them for au$12.98 each, as Ezydvd are usually more expensive compared to other Australian retailers.
