Default The Purge Review Thread

Quote:
Universal Pictures has slated May 31, 2013 for James DeMonaco’s Platinum Dunes-produced The Purge (formerly Vigilandia), a political slasher starring Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge, Tony Oller and Rhys Wakefield.

“The sci-fi thriller takes place in a future where a new regime, called “New Founding Fathers of America”, seek to control an epidemic of violence and crime with an experiment called “The Cure”. The Cure is a completely hypocritical “event” where, three times a year, for 12 hours, murder is completely legal. The film is said to play like a home invasion film with a heavy political theme. It’s planned to be the first film in a post-apocalyptic franchise.”

The film is being released by Universal from its deal with producer Jason Blum, who partners with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. Blum, Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing with Sébastien Kurt Lemercier.

Seems like a interesting movie. Especially the thing where Murder is legal for 12 hours.

The film is sounding a bit silly to me, there's a slim chance it'll work but politics (if that's the correct term for what the film is) and slasher seem like two things that should never mesh together.

Well this is heavily hyped isn't it.

Thoughts on the trailer, well the idea seems inventive, although still completely implausible. Does every Horror film need to be produced by the same people who did Paranormal Activity. The political satire seems all a bit unfocused and they even got Michael Bay's obligatory orange sunset shot.

I'll wait for reviews on this one since it's a bit of a mixed bag.

It seems so. But give it a few years and it won't matter.

As for the movie looks interesting. Might check it out in theaters.

YouTube trailer for those who can't view it on that website.

This looks fun.

Masked Killer/Home invasion is making a comeback with this and You're Next. They better rush The Strangers 2 for next Spring.

So one night a year, people get to kill people. What about the other 364 days?

"Oh, hey, remember that time you tried to kill me?"

"Yeah, but that was during The Purge."

"So I'm just supposed to keep working with you, knowing you're a complete psycho and tried to kill me before and act like nothing is wrong."

"Yeah."

"Oh, okay."

On the other 364 days, illegal things are illegal.

The concept is really silly, but most political satire is just stuff pushed to exaggeration to make a point...I just don't get what the point is, or if it's all that terribly funny.

If pulled off, this might have a nice cult following to it.

I love the premise of it. Should be an entertaining flick to say the least, although I don't like the plot being about one family in survival mode like The Strangers.

If it's successful, there could be a sequel about anything illegal.

The loophole in this movie:

I'd hope they'd still be cracking down on Child Porn offenders.

Should be excellent, really enjoyed the trailer prior to the Evil Dead.

The whole movie is one loophole, really.

"I robbed ten banks yesterday but I don't have to go to jail because I did it during the purge."

Just because crime becomes legal for one night doesn't mean it becomes easy. If anything it would be harder, because everyone is preparing for it. Its hard enough robbing a bank in the real world. Do you really think you could rob a bank in a society that has something like the purge? The family in this movie have blast doors. I'm sure banks have blast doors and who know what kind of other security measures for the Purge night.

Could be a fun summer horror movie, but "political slasher"? Let's not act like this is going to be the intellectual movie of the summer. I'm going to go see it to watch people get murdered in a hilariously fantastical fashion.

Going by the trailer, the whole concept of "the purge" seems to be lost the minute this becomes another home invasion movie.

I imagine if there were a real purge, people like Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore and Fred Phelps would all be dead in the first six hours.

I saw this and what seemed like 3 other films where a bunch of people are trapped in a house while people outside are harassing them before The Evil Dead. Looks The Strangers rip off. Hope to be proven wrong.

That's what I thought after viewing the trailer. There will be the obligatory 30 minute buildup to the last hour being token home invasion horror.

Also, I fixed your second paragraph to make your list more realistic.

Exactly--They set the setup (ooh, contented suburbanites with home security systems), it turns home-invasion, and then all of a sudden the trailer starts playing ironic American anthems to tell us that this is all....POLITICALLY SATIRICAL of our 99% eat-the-contented-upper-middle-class culture!

...Yeah, pal. Suuuuure it is.

Happens, every time there's a surprise hit that caught low-budget producers by surprise, and then, all of a sudden, anybody connected with it, producer, writer, x-producer, director or company, was "the people behind it".
Remember when Gale Ann Hurd had a dozen irons in the fire after discovering James Cameron on "The Terminator", founded Carolco, and then, almost every week by the clock for the next six years, we had something "From the people behind Terminator and Aliens"?

As it is, think we'll be winding down the stuff from the Paranormal Activity people.
