In light of the debate, I think I'll buy the film even though I thought the movie was just okay. Thanks guys for your opinions! I swear the studios should start paying members of this forum. We promote movies that leads to more purchases than a commercial could haha well I dont know if this is a fact but we advertise the good movies really well on this site.

I think "Open Season" is the best reference Blu-ray disc for Animation.

troy is lackluster at best, Fox has produced some of the best transfers to date, with Disney releasing the best new releases with stunning PQ

Troy ? I have the regular cut, and it's awful, look like an upscaled DVD, with only some moments encoded at a higher rate. Substandart Blu disc (encoding ltd to 25gb probably, as it's the same on HD-DVD)

Default Sure is the best but...

Sure does have almost the best PQ...
But compared to the majority Of VC-1 Encodes.
Harry Potter's Order of Phoenix is 1rst
And then- I am Legend 2nd
Alexander Revisited -Tied 3rd
I-Robot maybe fourth. because it uses CGI (the best use of Mpeg4 so far)
All the Above are perfect 10's for PQ

I have learned the hard way in that the MOST important factor 1rst is SOURCE MATERIAL!
If the Source is littered with grain effects or some odd color scheme or crap CGI effects , wierd Visual direction, or is just plain OLD and rotten. Then it will not work well with transfer to HD.(example, 300 looks like shit!!! in HD).

Then of course theres Encoding and mastering.

There is a price to pay for Encoding..To me VC-1 is the best IMHO..I have seen this coming since Microsoft had WMVHD releases on DVD's.WMVHD is VC-1

So alot of the earlier crap was released on Mpeg2 and the encoding really was horrific...
I blelieved they purposely did this to hold off HD phasing out Standard DVD.

Obviously direct CGI Digital(Cars,Rataouille,Surfs up) to 1080p yields the greatest PQ, but lets talk about real images..Folks

I, Robot is the new reference Blu-ray for picture quality. The great encoders at Panasonic who handle Fox's BD encodes are churning out the best HD now. There are several reasons why their encodes are consistently better than other studios but I'll list the main ones.

1) Use of BD-50
2) Highest average and peak bitrates used of any studio
3) Using AVC as a codec
4) Using DTS-HD MA as the sole audio track saves space
5) Few if any extras

These factors combined with a good master will almost always lead to a phenomenal looking BD. I will restrain myself and not point out some of the deficiencies in the other BDs mentioned in this thread.

I don't even know how to appropriately word how much I disagree with you on this. It's obvious you don't like grain, don't want to get into that. But 300 looks incredible on Blu-ray. I know there are plenty of people who will agree with that one.

I, Robot is beautiful PQ and AQ, but I think there are better for each individually, but maybe not as a whole just yet.

Hmm, not sure I agree with most of that. In fact, I'd probably rate Kingdom of Heaven and it's MPEG-2 encode over any of the Harry Potter movies and Alexander. Most of the VC-1 titles don't look as sharp as I'd like. I don't know if it's the codec or something else they do that causes that. I figured it was the codec since it seems that most of the blu-ray only studios seem to produce sharper looking titles like I prefer and they aren't using VC-1.

The site here says 50gb and HDD and HTS say the same. Do you have a link indicating otherwise? Not that it matters, just curious.
