Well, anything is possible. Just don't get your hopes up lest they be dashed.

I think a lot of people feel this way, as good as Blu-ray is it's still hasn't been fully embraced, and to add yet another format namely 4K I think that it will never get out of the hardcore niche market.

I agree, I have seen it myself and it is very noticeable if I go 4k it would most likely be a projector. Everyone is so focused on resolution, but the big thing about 4k that a lot of people miss is the increased colour space this will be immediately noticeable even on a smaller screen, say good bye to banding, the other added benefit is B&W movie will also look better.

Yeah, the increase in color saturation/replication will be the other big plus since we already have lossless audio. I certainly have no problem with seeing banding being abolished as it still seems to creep into new releases from time to time.

With reasonably decent gear and good blu-ray transfers, you aint getting much better video/audio quality for home. Just isnt happening. Maybe someone with a 50 foot screen that they sit 3 feet away from might benefit.

I wasn't talking about 4K being a bad gimmick, i was talking about those BD movies with the "Mastered in 4K" labels on them, that are going to be released next month on May 14th being a bad gimmick.

Oh geesh - I actually find the 4K thing to be just as gimmicky as 3D or whatever.

I just cant see everyone buying everything again. Movies, gear, everything. No freegin way. Why? So the masses can once again hardly see any real difference? Then, as others here have pointed out: When wil they start to pimp 12K? 24K? Eleventy billion K?

Oh shit, I just realized something. In a couple of years when 4K is the norm, I will again be buying my favorite films all over again. Not only that but a 4K tv and player.
Oh well. That's how it goes with this hobby.

No, you won't. The only films that will be worth buying in 4K are 35mm films that have recently been remastered. Then if they need a restoration as well that will cost the studio additional money. I am honestly waiting until we get to 8K so that I can enjoy 65/70mm films properly.

That's what I was referring to. Once 8K hardware and content is available and films, especially films shot in 70MM, are made available in 8K, we would essentially have to purchase our films over again.

I thought we all decided a year ago that 4K wouldn't be noticeable unless you had a mega huge screen.

You need more than 8k to leave nothing on the print, more like 12k

True, but it would look absolutely fantastic at 8K on a Large Screen

Yeah, but what are the odds of there being a 12K display in the next decade? Probably next to nil.

Or, You could play your current 1080P BD movies in a future 4K BD Player and Ultra HDTV, that will likely work up to double the resolution of 1080P , which is what i am planning on doing when the time comes for that. I would think that any current 1080P BD movie would be able to play in any future BD Player and Ultra HDTV, in double the resolution of 1080P with a progressive scan rather then an Interlaced scan. That's considering that i can play all my old Dvds in 1080P, on my Blu-ray player and HDTV that both work up to 1080P.

Upconversion is the cheap way out. This is why I upgraded all of my DVDs that were available on BD during 2008. Upconversion hardly looks any better.

I wasn't talking about playing Dvds on a Dvd upconverter player and hdtv on that post to Retroj23. I was talking about playing current 1080P BD movies in a future 4K BD Player and Ultra HDTV. Which i know would work because its just like how anyone can play, their old dvds on a BD player and it will play in 1080P depending on if you have a 1080P hdtv though.
