That's a curious question. Under normal assumptions, I would have thought each disk that sells more than 100k would have a lot of good press, but WB is still quiet.

Unfair I say!! Consumer sales shouldn't be allowed to be reported. How can claims of BD losing to downloads/flash catch on in the consumer psyche if the BDA are allowed to prove Blu-ray is succeeding?!

Total DVD sales for 1998 (2nd year of DVD) = 9.3 million Total DVD sales for 1999 (3rd year of DVD) = 19.75 million Total DVD sales for first two years (1997 + 1998) = 11 million Blu-Ray total sales for it's first two years (2006 + 2007) = 6 million For it's first 3 years, DVD sold 30.5 million units To match it's pace, there would have to be 21.5 million Blu-Ray discs sold between now and Xmas (probably not going to happen). Given that DVD ran un-opposed and had more of a "novelty" advantage then Blu-Ray... I think Blu-Ray is doing extremely well. Given the rapid adoption pace currently being experienced by Blu-Ray I think we might be able to match DVD's pace by end of Q1 2009 but will Blu-Ray be able to continue to match it further down the line is the BIG question (DVD boomed between 2000-2002... will Blu-Ray experience the same boom?...) Since many people who own blu ray discs have more than one disc
this means a large group of the pie of ps3 owners do not even own a blu ray movie. |

Or unless you count the fact that Blu-Ray's are used for the games that the PS3 runs. And as an aside those are the US totals, considering that I'm not even sure that there have been 10 million PS3's sold in N/A thus far, I'd be forced to say that you're likely wrong, the averages work out to being slightly more disks have sold than players, and yes since some people have more than one disk you could be right about not every PS3 owner having a Blu-Ray movie, but that begs the question of "who cares?" In 1999, The Matrix helped jack up sales numbers of DVD discs by a great deal. That one movie accounts for a major part of that 10 million discs sold difference from 1998.
I remember very well that most DVDs were priced $20 or more (some even well over $30). Then The Matrix arrived in stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy priced at only $14.99 or even less than that. Hell, I paid more money for the music soundtrack CD of The Matrix than I did for the DVD! There is a chance we could see a similar, very aggressive push on the part of Hollywood studios for selling new movies on Blu-ray this fall. If certain major summer releases do very well at the box office they may also be priced aggressively low when they hit DVD and Blu-ray. Warner Bros. has had a history of being aggressive in cutting prices for major releases, be it with The Matrix or pricing the LOTR movies via New Line really low as well (I think I paid $13.49 for Return of the King). If The Dark Knight posts real blockbuster numbers at commercial movie theaters then Warner Bros. might be inclined to sell the Blu-ray version of that movie at an unprecedented low price. |
