The real stumbling block is not in any manufacturer having the ability to build a digital 8K camera, if they put their minds and resources into it, but rather, in 8K exhibition - due to the large data rate.

Which is fine.. but Hollywood is still using the Arri Alexa, which shoots 2.8K, and the Red Epic, which tops out at 5K. No one is using anything better... yet. So, as I said, there's no 8K content, except maybe some 70mm or IMAX films.

8K will be pointless for any film made before 8K cameras are adopted, which is the entire of cinema history. Maybe people should start actually using 8K cameras before they go and try to market the systems which will have zero benefit.

They scanned Lawrence of arabia in 8K,so there'll be atleast one movie for it I think 2001:ASO would also benefit-maybe not from 8K,but certainly from 4K.

What seems strange to me is that they went from vertical resolution (720/1080) to horizontally(4K:3840x2160).Anyone know the reason why they did,or was it because it sounds more impressive...

Maybe I've got it wrong...

I like the way NHK is giving attention to all the pieces in their futuristic end-to-end 8K pipeline….rather than just concentrating on the 8K cameras themselves. Heck, people were shooting with RED cameras and acquiring footage for years in 4K (well, actually 3.1-3.2 effective with the Red One) before anyone else had a 4K camera(s) and only a very small (i.e. tiny) fraction of that content was ever finished in 4K because of the tall hurdle of 4K post production. For that matter, still only a small fraction of Hollywood movies are finished in 4K despite the now plethora of 4K cameras offered from different manufacturers.

Additionally, you’ve had professional cameras capable of shooting 1080p/60 (or higher frame rates at that HD resolution) which arguably is superior especially for sporting events because people can perceive the increased temporal resolution at further screen to eye distances, but the problem is that there has been no production or distribution or home infrastructure for HFR > 60p (at 1080 rez).

Note:

Colloquially, we all (or, at least I think most of us here, including me) use the terms 4K TV and 8K TV when discussing high-rez displays/monitors. But, in case some folks read the more scientifically oriented literature and come across the terms UHDTV Level 1 and UHDTV Level 2 and are confused….wondering exactly what those designations mean -

Well, the ITU recently defined two specific formats for use in UHDTV systems:
UHDTV Level 1 – Resolution: 3840 x 2160
UHDTV Level 2 – Resolution: 7680 x 4320

So, in essence, UHDTV Level 1 refers to 4K displays and UHDTV Level 2 refers to 8K displays.

Besides, I doubt if the human eye can actually see a differance between BD and 4k, 8k, etc except maybe on a giant screen. Which will probably never happened for the average viewer??

LOA was scanned at 8K for the latest restoration, but finished at 4K.
