Default Audiophiles & Blu-ray

I see Nine Inch Nails has a released 'Ghosts' as a HiDef BlueRay Album. I am wondering if Blue Ray will become the next delivery for the audiophile community. Can the uncompressed 24bit, 96k LPCM audio of BlueRay finally replace vinyl as the preferred media?

I don't think any digital format will unseat vinyl on the throne of the audiophile kingdom. One reason is simply that vinyl doesn't involve digitizing and decoding the music and so it will always have that "holistic" quality to audiophiles in the same way that organic foods are preferred among food connoisseurs. The other reason is the massive quantity of music available on vinyl--much of which was never released on CD and (barring some miracle) will not see the light of day on BD either. So audiophiles will continue to sink money into their turntables and LP collections.

To my ears, DSD (SACD) is preferable than high res PCM. I do like the sound of many BDs, though, and would certainly welcome more music on the format. Neil Young's big retrospective project is rumored to be slated for BD release. We'll see what the studios/labels do with music on blu-ray. So far, there is enough out there to show the promise of the audio capabilities, but not enough for BD to be considered an audio format per se.
