The 3D at the beginning was hard on the eyes but the rest was fine. I'll probably be trying going after whatever the most definitive release of this movie.

EPIC FAIL!

And a new record was set with the amount of lens flares.
I don't care about the lens flares. At this point you know to expect an abundance of that. But that line change did bug me too. It made sense in the last movie since Spock Prime from the post-Next Gen era was saying it, but why would young Kirk say "no one" instead of "no man"? Did Spock Prime convince Starfleet to switch to the more politically correct version a few decades in advance?

DAY 1 for me, unless they screw us again by giving the 3-D edition more extras than the 2-D one, but that's usually a FOX thing, right?

Love this movie more than the '09 Star Trek.

Hope it comes with an extra BD for the bonus features like the '09 release!

I don't think it's all that deep - and as we have already seen a lot of repercussions from the change in timeline, I don't think it's incredibly off-base.

In all honesty, I think it could also be argued that it's not necessarily about being politically correct about including females but including all species, as Starfleet has an abundance of non-human species at this point in the timeline (in fact, much more diverse than the original series was, though that was likely due to budgetary concerns at the time more than anything else).

We also have to remember that this Kirk has had a completely different life than James T - quite literally from birth, as his birth is where the time line shifted. "Our" Kirk grew up happy and with a mom and a dad, whereas this Kirk did not and was quite troubled at times. They have completely different life experiences.

That said, it may just be political correctness - and just like I don't think you will hear Uhura referred to as a "charming negress" as she was in the original series, I don't think that's particularly a bad thing.

"What a charming negress. Oh, forgive me, my dear. I know that in my time some used that term as a description of property."

"But why should I object to that term, sir? You see, in our century we've learned not to fear words."

- "Lincoln" and Uhura

All that said, your post also made me think of what I found to be one of the cooler things about the film, which I didn't have an expectation for -
[Show spoiler]the appearance of Spock Prime! I had kind of forgotten about the rumors, and thought it was most appropriate. It definitely wasn't at throw-away, and if they hadn't, I think people would have been saying, "Well why didn't he ask Spock Prime?" Loved it, the real surprise of the film to me - and I admit I was so into the film I didn't even think about that when Spock was trying to contact New Vulcan.

I saw a preview for this in 3D while watching Iron Man in 3D and I was so turned off by the 3D. It may have just been the theater I was in, but it looked like a 2D image that had been separated to make it look 3D. I just bought a 3D TV and the 3D on my TV has depth, I wasn't going to see this in 3D in the theater, but maybe I should give it another try if everyone here is saying the conversation actually looks good?

Preaty sure any current 3-D movie shot on film has to be post conversion 3-D.

I usually hate 3D in the theater, but thought it was pretty good in this one.
However 3D looks way better in my home theater. Just hope I have a new house come September.

[Show spoiler] They don't but it didn't bother me as much as I'd thought. Since no one looks the way they did in the show, besides Spock Prime, it's easier to accept the changes.

With that site, I would suggest clicking the "top critics" link to give you a better idea of how the film is doing critically. It's currently at 80% fresh based on 44 reviews. That's 14 points below the previous film, btw.

No more than they ever explained how Sulu went from being Japanese to Korean or how Uhura went from African-American to predominantly Latin/Dominican/Puerto Rican. Or was your question just an attempt to be clever?

And don't forget how the Enterprise is almost as big as Picard's ship now!

80% is still very good though. Just curious, but why consider just the "top critics"? I personally don't put any more weight behind one opinion vs another as each one is still just that.......an opinion.

I have now talked to 5 people locally who have seen it and opinions ranged from "as good as the first" for 2 of them, "better than the first" for 2 of them and the fifth has somehow not seen the first so he could not say. All just opinions of course and I could love it or hate it, but word of mouth is very positive on this film which has me excited as I loved the first one. This will definitely be one of the few films I actually make it out to see as I usually just wait for the blu.

Because they have more years of experience writing film criticism, they generally have a greater breadth of knowledge about cinema and I enjoy reading about films from a well-written, knowledgeable perspective (even if I ultimately disagree)... so yeah, I do tend to give more weight to their opinions.

I certainly don't agree with the proposition that all opinions are equal.

The last hour of this movie was awful. Loved the 2009 film and was very disappointed.

I saw the movie Thursday and liked it. I will get it on blu-ray. Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley will never be topped as Kirk, Spock, and McCoy but I do like Pine & Urban. I just don't like Quinto as Spock. I do like Zoe Saldana as Uhura & the rest and liked Alice Eve in the movie. I hadn't seen her in anything before.
