lol if you had the hong kong version, you could watch it in Chinese :P
Fair enough. I watch regular live action foreign films with the subtitles, but these I don't of course. It's easier to get away with watching animated movies dubbed given the fact that the lips never quite match up for the whole movie even in the native language. To each their own though of course.

For me it's because of the content.

Isn't this the first Ghibli film that GKIDS is distributing upon initial release? GKIDS currently has distribution rights for a lot of the Ghibli films (which they acquired a year or two ago), but they don't have the rights to the more recent films that Disney distributed to theaters. Since Disney decided to forgo distribution of this film, I doubt they will handle the home video release. That's my understanding anyway.

From what I've read on GKIDS Twitter and Facebook, GKIDS does have the home video rights and will be releasing it on blu-ray and DVD this fall.

Yes, this is the first time GKIDS has had the initial US theatrical distribution rights to a new Studio Ghibli film.

Disney distributed several of the films before Ponyo, but now GKIDS owns the theatrical rights. I'm sure Disney still owns the home video rights to them, but in the end, it seems this won't be one of them. Fine by me as long as it still gets a high quality release.

Not sure. According to IMDb, the only country Disney had the theatrical distribution rights was in France. Intercontinental is supposed to be the distributor in Hong Kong.

Walt Disney Japan is the home video distributor in Japan for Studio Ghibli (although Toho releases them in theaters). Hence, they are listed as one of the production companies (since they do help fund Studio Ghibli's productions as part of their home video distribution agreement).

I think Intercontinental releases Studio Ghibli films on their own, but they do distribute Disney HK home video releases.

I believe Disney also distributed the film in Taiwan and although Deltamac releases Studio Ghibli films in Taiwan, I think they do on behalf of Disney since Disney films are released by Deltamac and recent Studio Ghibli Blu-ray releases (such as Only Yesterday) in Taiwan have the Disney logo on the back. although From Up on Poppy Hill's Taiwan blu-ray release seems to lack the Disney logo.

Does anyone know if, and I can't believe I'm asking this...
Does anyone know if this will come with a SlipCover and if it does, will it match up with the other Studio Ghibli/Disney Covers?
I only ask, because they look really nice on the shelf...

It won't match the Disney ones, but others here have said that previous GKIDS releases have come with slips, so this one should too.

I like the Gold Spine.
I'll probably just wait for Disney to release it than.

Disney won't be releasing it at all. GKIDS has home video rights so unless they sell them back to Disney years down the road, there will never be a Disney home video edition of From Up on Poppy Hill. Think Grave of the Fireflies, this one is not going to match but I'm just happy we're getting it on Blu-ray in the first place! I was worried about a DVD only release.

Did GKIDS gain the distribution rights to the other new Ghibli films as well, or just FUoPH?

I think the next The Wind is Rising might be from Disney, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya from GKIDS

If Disney picks one up, it'll be the Takahata because it's fantasy. Even with Miyasaki's named attached, I seriously doubt they'd release a dramatic biopic of the man who designed the planes used to bomb Pearl Harbor. I mean, they couldn't even be bothered to release a sweet coming-of-age drama like Ocean Waves on video, so why would they spend millions on a theatrical release for a movie like The Winds is Rising? I bet GKIDS will end up releasing both.

It would be a first for Disney to skip on a Miyazaki project.

Besides, Kaze Tachinu is not really a dramatic biopic in the traditional sense - it literally has anthropomorphic pigs.

What's surprising is that Disney ever released The Yamadas on DVD, considering the other films they've passed on.

I also think there's a very good chance that Disney will pick up Takahata's Kaguya Hime for release.
