Default picture quality: hd-dvd vs bluray

honestly who has better picture quality hd-dvd or blu-ray? i own a ps3 basically for the blu-ray movie player, but i saw circuitcity was selling a hd-dvd player for 350 with 4 free movies after rebates......so should i buy an hd-dvd player or not? i mean the only reason id even want one is if the PQ is really better, i honesly think that hd-dvd will die soon and especially if universal starts doing bluray, and with the sales numbers they would be very dumb not to do bluray. but if you own a hd-dvd player and a blu-ray player please let me know, is the PQ better, worse or the same.

I really haven't noticed a difference in quality. They both look equally amazing on my TV.

Technically BLU-RAY has a better picture quality if in the future Super Bit movies are released to fill up the 50GB disc with MPEG-4/AVC at bit rates as high as 40 Mbit/s for video only. Specs wise Blu-ray is better then HD-DVD if studios choose to use the max capability of Blu-ray. Now in reality studios like Warner use the exact same bit rate and video codec for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray and the titles look exactly the same regardless of format.
The only reason you would need a HD-DVD player is if you wanted to watch Universal Studios movies in HDTV. That is the only major advantage of owning a HD-DVD player right now.

With 67% of movies in high definition being available on Blu-ray right now, and almost three quarters of the ones that are not being Universal, the main reason to buy HD DVD is to watch Universal movies. (But then you don't get to watch Sony Columbia Tri-Star Disney Miramax Touchstone 20th Century-Fox MGM Lions Gate Magnolia movies.) Your choice.

Picture and sound quality is equal or better in most titles.

Yep. If the 8 major studios equals 100%, Universal is only 12.5% of the pie. The others release on Blu-ray. In other words, $350 for 12.5% of the major studio pie that Blu-ray isn't giving you is a VERY high cost of ownership.

to be perfectly honest, I can't tell the difference in picture quality between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. I chose Blu-Ray because it has more titles that I want.

Indeed, the reason to buy HD DVD at all is not a picture quality advantage. One expects the picture quality from format-neutral studios to be equal on both formats because of shared encodings - and neutral studios comprise perhaps 87.5% of HD DVD's major studios group.

I think the FUD that Amir and his followers tried to propagate is clearly no longer effective.
