^^^ Fair review, boss...even though I graded it way higher, your write-up is decent.

Also, wasn't it 1,000 years since humans left Earth, not 100? I forget.

[Show spoiler]Any show you go to see, whether it be magic shows or the movies, rely on dazzling and guiding the audience to a surprising and enjoyable outcome, ultimately making the audience believe that what they see is real. In Now You See Me, the principles of magic are used in this interesting premise: magicians who use their skills in deception and illusion to stage daring bank heists in front of the eyes of their audiences and the police.

This film is not as deep or thoughtful as other magician-themed films, like The Prestige or The Illusionist. As a heist film, however, it's phenomenally entertaining. The film sets up the cop and robbers characters with playful energy and chemistry, before breaking out the visually-impressive theatrics and action scenes. It's not big on action, but the film does move fluidly, and above all, the characters are fun to watch. I'd say it's every bit as enjoyable as a film like Ocean's 11, The Italian Job or The Thieves.

Critics will likely find fault in the plot, which requires some huge suspension of disbelief to accept. Given the twists and the liberal use of magic tricks, plot holes are bound to be present. It might be especially frustrating to watch the more fantastic moments and wonder how these characters could pull off such trickery; the film does reveal the particulars of what's going on with the overall heists, but there are other moments where the film seems to assert that magic is actually happening.

However, there is a certain theme to the picture, stipulating that "the closer you look, the less you see." Indeed, if you scrutinize this plot too closely, you'll miss out on the larger experience. The film practically implores you to just sit back, take it as it is, and enjoy things as they are. If you can suspend disbelief and go with the flow, you'll find that the plot is structured in wild and unpredictable ways. Characters are pretty shallow, but lively and rounded, and with a few surprises at times. There are certain things to the story that could have been explored more, but perhaps a sequel is in order.

Some of the film's action scenes get a little jittery, but most of it has solid photography and editing. Acting is superb all around: everybody puts on a playful and energetic performance. Writing is not bad. This production has good-looking sets, props, costumes, and okay special effects. Music is really hip.

The film asserts that magic is not about understanding how tricks work, but in making audiences believe in it, and making them smile. If you're the type who wants to look closely and find something deep, artistic, or even logical about Now You See Me, then the less you'll see. I was able to accept the film's illusion, and it made me smile at times, for it is an enjoyable show.

4/5 (Entertainment: Very Good | Story: Pretty Good | Film: Pretty Good)

Recommendation: See last paragraph.
Despite the mediocre reviews, I still want to see this. I don't think it's possible for me not to at least enjoy the movie based on the cast alone.

Yes, did I forget a zero...

Okay, I corrected it

As always I dug your review and I just wanted to applaud you for being open minded about the film. I fear many are going in wanting to laugh at it. My audience actually was quite receptive. There were few unintentional laughs, everybody gasped and jumped when it was called for...a surprisingly good theatrical experience.

By the way, I noticed that you've been reviewing more new releases, are you on moviepass?

I was expecting more mockery or something at the theater I went to, but everybody was quiet and attentive, and I think they enjoyed it.

Nope, never even heard of it. Might have to look into it.

It's been easy these days, because my hotel is right across the street from the cinema. But even when I move into the new place, I'll endeavor to go out to the theater more, to see the movies that interest me.

After Earth earned a B Cinemascore, so it's doing okay with audiences.

MoviePass is a service that gets you into one 2D movie per day for a flat fee of $29.99. So in theory if you go every other day to the cinema, you only pay $2 per ticket, so on and so forth.

The thing is, if you dont cancel within the first month, you have to wait until 12 months passes.

Is there a point at which the film has to be more than simple allegory, though? I enjoy symbolism and subtlety as much as the next person, but films of this nature tend to be a little underwhelming in their bite; I found The Village to suffer this fate -- it was much too concerned with being metaphorical than telling the story at its heart, and the narrative suffered.

Great review by the way! It's good to see both you and Al enjoying something that so many people have disliked.

I have been meaning to ask. What are those little squares you use for your ratings? And is it a 4 or 5 square max?

Default A Movie A Day: Day 407

Bedtime Stories (2008)
dir. Adam Shankman
The Good: Okay, I admit it managed to bring out a chuckle or two (or three). Oh, and Teresa Palmer in a gold bikini.

The Bad: Most attempts at humor fall flat. Sandler annoys more than amuses. All in all, it's your typical, safe, predictable, patronizing family movie.

The Bottom Line: They might have been onto something with the premise, but this shit is insulting even to seven-year-olds. Remember the days back when Disney used to make dark films that didn't talk down to kids?

4 star max. 2.5 stars is anything I think is just above mediocre.

Seven Psychopaths

What a mess of a movie.

But I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I could just watch Walken, Rockwell and Farrell give each othe crap for hours on end. When Farrell announced that the second half of the movie should just be the main characters sitting around in the desert, just talking, I was like "Yeah, sounds good to me."

I lost the link, but everybody's using them on the Top films of 2013 thread. Can you read those?

Pretty much spot on. It's pretty daft and dense with its pseudo-intellect, but at least it's a lot of fun.

It had a zillion quotable lines too. In the right frame of mind, it is truly laugh out loud funny.
