Oh the irony. I was banned for being an "admitted viral poster". Of course they can't provide any evidence of this amusingly paranoid claim. It must have been the dig on Bill Gates and, by proxy, one of his flunkies.

I can sort of understand the anguish of being an early adopter of a format in decline but come on - it's a spirited discussion. The Sony bashing there is more vicious than anything I've ever said. Someone is clearly getting paid off.

Maybe they thought you were serious when you posted:

I admit, when I was first approached by Sony President Ken Kutaragi to be part of Operation Def-Ray (the early code name for Phase Hydra) I was skeptical. Why should I get paid for posting the obvious? But after careful consideration, I accepted.

Two months into my training on the Japanese mainland, I caught wind of a plan to deploy special undercover units tasked with placing high-level HD-DVD proponents and forum regulars in compromising positions. At that point I walked away. I don't know what became of Phase Hydra and I don't want to know.

Now get out of that darkened home theater and get some air.

Too funny...

I thought it was a bit ridiculous and posted a very tongue-in-cheek response to an accusation I was involved in "Phase Hydra".

That's hilarious. Nothing like playing with the heads of conspiracy theorists.

I stopped reading those silly threads over at AVS. I just look through the Rant thread for the goodies, but otherwise it's the same garbage again and again

I have thousands of posts at AVSForums, I think over 5,000. I love the forum and understand the rules. I won't post comments like the one shown here which is only an attempt to start trouble and contains nothing helpful. I will start paying more attention and post responses to the HD DVD FUD, if I miss something, bring it to my attention. The High Def Forum has the most HD DVD FUD per capita and I haven't been watching at AVSForums lately. The trouble we are faced with is simple, as long as Universal is HD DVD exclusively, HD DVD will be around and both formats will do poorly in terms of market and profits in my opinion. The stupid announcement of the Samsung dual format player isn't helping either. Stick to facts and personal opinions, not inflammatory remarks at that or any forum. Although I wouldn't have known the post shown here would result in being banned, I do know it is against my understanding of the intent for any of these forums.

A similar comment about Sony/Blu-ray at that forum hopefully isn't permitted either.

Well, I am testing your theory (which I do not believe). I voted for Blu-ray, and posted a message on my reasoning why..... all honest opinions.... (no baiting) [and not my first message -- number 6]. I am guessing I will still be there in the morning

Inflammatory is calling someone a fanboy actively taking part in a disinformation campaign.

I only pointed out that VC-1 isn't lossless at HD-DVD bitrates and added that only one format has the capacity to handle LOTR. Ok, the viral marketing comment maybe somewhat inflammatory but that's clearly what's going on over there. Have you seen the insider forum lately? It's X-Box central.

I even paid homage to Microsoft with a quote from Bill Gates. Everything I posted was true and unassailable.

"Can't wait to see those low-bitrate LOTR encodes. Too bad only one format has sufficient capacity. Sorry, I just don't buy Microsoft's viral marketing about VC-1."
The last sentence is the inflammatory remark, rather than that statement, point out what is wrong with Microsoft's marketing of VC-1. With a stupid format war like this, there are going to be emotional arguments in favor of one format or the other. I can promise you, the overwhelming majority of the arguments in favor of HD DVD are by consumers, not Microsoft insiders. I can step back and look at the issues without emotion and the obvious reasons for only one format and for the one format to be Blu-ray are clear to me. I can't understand why everybody can't just see, having only one format is best, Blu-ray has the technical advantage, greater studio support, greater CE manufacturer support, and is currently the leader in software sales and equipment sold to play the discs. I look at the facts and see clearly, it is time to end this nonsense, too many consumers are buying neither until there is only one, surely over 50 percent will avoid both until there is a clear winner. With one format, the confusion goes away and getting the best possible HD source for the new HDTV becomes of interest to a much large market.

Unfortunately, this stupid war is going to continue.

I share your sentiments. For a lot of the strong HD DVD proponents, the battle has already become an emotional one - is there still any non-emotional reason for supporting HD DVD? I'm afraid Mr. Kornblau is just one of them.

Microsoft insiders have suggested you don't need more than 30gb to encode a movie because VC-1 is so amazingly efficient. I believe they once claimed a 64kbps WMA file sounded as good as a 128kbps MP3. Anyone that's taken the time to compare will find the claim ludicrous.

But you're right, the format war is stupid
